I'm looking high and low to find the front to rear gear ratio for my L3400 HST. If anyone has the manual indicating this, I would appreciate if they could post it. Thanks. C.

I've got the workshop manual but don't see anything listed, I've looked under front axle, rear axle, hst drivetrain sections. I guess you could also infer this from the front and rear tire diameters. R4 15x19.5 and R4 27-8.50-15 are ~40 inches and ~26.5 inches. If my math is right the fronts turn approx 1.5 times for rears 1 turn or 3:2 ratio. Are you changing your tires?

"Are you changing your tires?"

.....well I may have an extra set on rims that I may be able to use. I currently have your stated R4's on and the ones that I am considering are R1 7-16 4ply and R1 12.4-24 4ply....The ratio is close and ideally I would like to calculate the 5% margin from the gear ratio instead of the existing tires. Yea, I looked through the shop manual and it doesn't have the ratio that you are looking for listed at all...

OK.....thanks.....It looks like I'll have to go to the dealer for this one

The 7-16 front is the stock R1, mine are Carlisle Farm Specialists, the rears are 11.2-24 Firestone Traction Field and Road, which have been dropped from Firestone's current catalog in that size.

The last L series tractors I saw on the dealer's lot with R1s were equipped with Titans on one machine, and something different (off shore) on the other. Cheap looking tire...

The 12.4-24 may not work well, it depends on the aspect ratio of the tire. I agree, more width would be a very good thing, the 11.2-24 are narrow.

The front to rear gear ration for the L3400HST is 1.55. When one knows this, it takes a lot of guess work out of tire sizing. My thanks to Brady Barlow for digging this up for me.

Thanks for posting it... It may help others too.

So you mentioned getting another set of tires... do you know what model they are off of?

They were off an L3130. The front to rear ratio for this one is 1.5701. They won't work on my machine...I could use the rears if I get slightly larger fronts.

1.55 vs. 1.57 - Is that enough to be a problem? I wonder since my front tire air pressure is usually much lower vs. the rear (leaky front tires) so my *actual* ratio is most likely "off". I wonder if changing air pressure you could compensate.

Next time I'm with the tractor, I'm going to mark off the tires at 90* and on the ground... and drive one rotation and see what I get. Then repeat with a bucket full of gravel. I'm always in 4x4 so I might need to keep air topped off in the front tires  more...
