L3400 sight glass leaking

Same story as everyone else---tractor had about 125 hours on it--saw oil leak on shop floor. Found sight glass area to be the problem. Touched the clear plastic glass and it fell off in my hand. The replacement one is of a different material and hopefilly does not have the same problem.

I did my annual maintenance this past weekend. I ordered a new sight glass when I ordered everything else. I replaced it after I drained the hydraulic fluid. I inspected the old one and the only signs of wear were on the outer edges of the rubber gasket. No problems otherwise.

This was an L3400 HST with 240 hours.

I found the plastic plug was cracked. Maybe it was over tightened at the plant. Any way, there is now a 3/4" pipe plug in there with a touch of thread seal. I'm shocked it wasn't some metric plug.

I made a dip stick form a welding rod to check the oil from the fill hole in the rear. I'd rather spend a minute to check the oil that way than risk another hydraulic spill.

PTO cable, your next!
Ditto for me. Mine was dripping & I thought it was loose; the threads had cracked. $40 for a new one (2022), nope. A 3/4"
threaded PVC plug works fine. I fill it until fluid weeps from the bottom of the hole, put in the plug & add a gallon.
