L3800 vs L3540

If you can afford it, go with the L3540. I considered the L4240 and instead went with the MX5100. My decision was that I did not need all the 'bells & whistles" but did want a around 50hp with decent lifting capacity and a strong BH.

i 2nd the MX5100 HST as i own an run 1.an it does everything i want an more.i dont like the GLs because of all the electronics.i just heard of a guy that has a GL having to spend $4500 for 2 injectors.

What does that have to do with electronics. Same engine/injectors in the GL's as the MX.

Do you think the 5100 has different injectors?

I don't know about the injectors, but the MX5100 sure gives you a lot of bang for your Kubot-a-bucks! I do miss some of the amenities that were on my L though.

Both tractors and engines have mechanical fuel injection systems wih inline type mechanical fuel pumps. No electronics involved with fuel injection. What are you talking about??? Not knocking the MX5100, great tractor, but so is my L3940.

I am not a big fan of electronics on tractors but I sure like my l5740 and I know I will curse the electronics someday. I needed the biggest bang in the physical size of the L's and I would have got the l4400 if it had the larger loader available. Nice simple tractor but too light for the bigger loader. I also looked real close at the L3800 and decided it was not enough bigger than my b3200 to make the switch. Sit on and drive them all, have some fun doing it and buy the one that you like the best. We all here know what's best for you:laughing: and have lots of cheap advice:D But in the end it is what you want that matters.;)

Sounds like sage advice. I've scheduled some drive time for my wife and I on both the L3800 and L3540 for Friday afternoon. Sounds like that will help us make up our minds. I appreciate the thoughts on some alternatives - I need to be careful on I guess what I will call "power creep". I'm not sure I could convince the wife that we need something in the M series... (as she reads this over my shoulder...)

What I did was rent a compact tractor a Kubota 3200su from a tool rental to mow my pasture with. found out the smaller size wasnt for me. Plenty of power but I couldnt rest my arms anywhere while mowing no arm rest and fender too low to reach. HSt with no cruise ability didnt go very well either.
For forty acres I would recommend a L4400 or MX5100 both 4wd with loaders. You/she will get used to the size of these machines most bang for the buck

If you plan on a lot of loader work, you may want to consider the joystick location. I personally do not like the loader frame mounted location that the Lxx00 and MX series use. The floor mounted on the Lxx40 and the larger M is a lot easier to use for a lot of loader work. This is just my opinion, and something else to consider. That alone would be worth the extra money for me.

There's several things that made it worth while for us, tilt wheel, adjustable seat back, swivel seat, the auto-throttle, joystick location, easier to get on and off, etc. Almost anyone can drive the Grand L series with ease and comfort. Where we priced both the L4400 and L3940 the difference in price was only like 10%.
