Does anyone on this board have a new L4400 ? I need info on the "Shuttle" shift operation. IE how does it work compared to a normal Kubota shuttle shift with the GST trans.
It is just a standard gear driven system, you have a high, low and reverse with with 4 different gears for each. I am used to the gear driven tractors so it has never been a problem. You just about have to stop to shift when going form forward to reverse but you can change speeds by using the clutch to shift gears.
I am too, I have operated 100 hp John Deeres for the last couple of years on a farm I ran. This little tractor amazes me at what it can do. Plenty of power for the price.
I've had a gear drive L4400 for 3 months. Had a Ford 8N for 25+ years.
The shuttle shift mechanism works well; important to note that you need to come to a COMPLETE stop to shift otherwise you get a pronounced "clash" of gears.
You didn't ask but I'll mention that the PTO mechanism is a SUPERIOR arrangement. You don't need to clutch to engage or disengage it. But you either need to be sitting on the seat or have the seat tipped completely forward, otherwise an interlock system shuts off the engine. You may need to power down the speed with a PTO device that has momentum. Not sure about this. I've just been using my Farmi winch.
The tractor will start in any weather; it's -8 this morning and it'll start right up. So far, maybe 1 gal/hour fuel consumption, with relatively light useage, logging and plowing snow.

I've had my L4400 since Oct 05'..love it..very easy on the gas..I do alot of bucket work and have no problems with the shuttle. I grew up on a farmall H..so anything witout a bicycle front end is pleasant!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Really the shifting has not been an issue at all, I usually run in second..that way I can go into the pile in Low, backout, dump, and return in High, then down to Low and repeat. Seems to be about the quickest, depending of course how far you are actually taking each load. Sometimes, I wish my reverse was a cog faster.
