L48 for the weekend

Mutt, Ihave been reading your posts as well as those by patrickQ and others who have the 4610 or L48. I have been looking at the 4610 since its preview. Getting ready to decide on it and then the L48 comes out. I must be taking way to long to decide. I am considering the L48 TL, no hoe. I can get a price on it that is about $4500 more then the L4610 HST. Some of the justification I use is it already comes with the tires I want, has a canopy, larger fuel tank, loader ability is what I'm primarily after so the larger cu ft. capacity and lift will be better, I do like the layout of the controls a little better, it has a larger displacement engine, same net HP though and higher capacity set of hydraulic pumps.
The L4610 certainly has its merits as well. Better turning radius, ability to remove the loader, lower cost, lower ROP's height.
I know either way, they are great tractors, I was hoping for a little extra input from you and patrickq as to how you like your 4610's and you Mutt now that you've experienced both

I am totally sold on the L4610/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif, but I did hate to see the L48 go. I'll try to help with the following disclaimer...the FEL had not been dialed in(set by the dealership yet).This is something delivery guy mentioned on drop-off. It acted kind of like shoving a 4x8 sheet of plywood into a dirt pile.I am sure that a properly setup FEL would of worked better.One thing that distracted me was the physical size difference of the bucket.Not what I was used to..etc.. just larger than the L4610 one.Too much for my uses, but if I was earning a living with it, maybe more is better.I did not notice a difference in my weekend use in HP, in fact, it seemed less than the L4610. Maybe another tweak needed by the dealer?Also, the opportunity to get it into the tire differences never really happened.I have the os turfs on the L4610 loaded w/ rimguard.
I am convinced that I will rent the L48 for one more weekend because the backhoe is devastating on rocks/stumps & digging the hole to bury the junk.Will probably never own my own backhoe unless a great deal came along.

Mutt, the bucket issue puzzles me. They are both 72" buckets, the difference is in the gauge of steel and depth of the bucket. As far as HP, I'm pretty sure the 4610 will do well here especially since the lb/HP ratio is better. The HST is always inherently less powerful feeling to folks who have only used geared tractors, but once your familiar with it, it works so well. Is your 4610 HST? Rat...

Thanks for the answers Mutt. I am familiar with the L48 only in that I have acess to look at them at my local dealer who has about 4 of them in stock. It happened that one was parked next to a L4610 HST and it is not so obvious that the L48's bucket is bigger. You really have to look. You have quite a place there and its always great to not only see folks out doing something, but adding to their dreams.
I was a little curious about your tires. Do you do a lot of mowing and is that why you have turfs? To tell you the truth, I'm not so sure that those would have much less traction then a set of R4's. R4's to me have ruggedness, but traction is so, so especially compared to R1's. Tell me, when you run into a pile of something stubborn, can you spin your wheels on either the L48 or 4610? I have yet to actually try doing something other then drive the HST tractors. Thanks again, Rat...

Rat, since you seem to focus on loaders and buckets, why dont you consider getting an ATI quick attach bucket instead of a Kubota bucket on whatever machine you buy. You then can get larger and stronger buckets and, more interestingly, you will be able to quick attach all the skidsteer front attachments like a hydraulic phd.

Thanks for the compliment on the place, it'll be a lifetime project. In answer to your questions, I do a lot of mowing, also a lot of travel on roads between projects. I am very happy with the tires.It's easy on the L4610! No problem coming away from a pile, or even digging and coming away with a full bucket. The HST drive allows you to give just enough forward thrust to get the job done, the tractor has the weight and power equation covered nicely. Sure, I could slam into a pile wide open and break 'em loose, but why?
It has opened up a lane 800' long that had a couple week old nearly 30" of snow on it. Just dropped the FEL and drove the full length of it/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif.Don't try it without plowing where you're driving in that much snow!Have a big woods blade on the rear so it's easy to punch your way in and open things up.We've popped a lot of trees straight out of the ground, combination of FEL and tractor power.Again, happy with the os turfs.I did notice one thing about the ags on the L48. It had been dry for quite a while and they were not marking up the lawn.Until!!! I washed the L48 after using it for the weekend.Wet lawn, it stapled it pretty deep. The os turfs are not good on ice at all. Also, i've had her in the oooooze down to the subframe for FEL, they load up, no doubt, but we got outta there.Oh, one last thought. By stubborn, you mean like when I was removing frozen piles of dirt because I had a tractor project that couldn't/wouldn't/(wait till spring)ok, I wanted to play with the new tractor.There was some snow on the ground but the piles disappeared before I realized it was too cold to be outside playing.I'd like to enter a tractor pull with 2 similar tractors, only difference being ags/turfs.Then we'd know.Maybe someday there will be a TBN meeting where we can all bring our tractors/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Glenmac, I do focus on the loader, but it really isnt the bucket I'm concerned with. Since I've never pushed either bucket into a pile of dirt and regarding the remarks by Mutt about the apparent lack of "push" he felt the L48 exhibited, I was curious as to what, where, why. I like the bigger bucket the L48 has as far as Cu. Ft. capacity goes. The Quik Tach is still a great option and would love to do it eventually. I could easily see buying a 72" or smaller 4N1 from Bobcat for it. The bucket that comes with the L 48 in all likelyhood can be adapted to attach to the Quik Tach. Rat...
