Been shopping for a m6040 (or 5040 or 7040 for the right price) for a while, but recently read the specs on the grand L series.

That little L5740 looks impressive. The way I read it the loader is capable of lifting 2500 lbs (roughly same as the m6040), the three point hitch capacity is only 300lbs lighter at 3000 vs 3300 for the m6040.

Am I crazy for comparing the capabilities of these two tractors? They look reasonably close on paper, but before I read the specs one seemed a toy and one was a real tractor... now I'm not so sure.

I think if you compare the 2 loaders you will find the loader on the 6040 will lift substantially more. Also the M6040 is a larger more agriculture oriented tractor with inboard planetary gears which are tougher than what is on the L5740.

Kuboman is exactly right. I think your comparing the lift at the "pivot point" on the L5740 to the lift at "bucket center" on the M6040. I to was confused when I got my L5040 thinking the loader was "close" to the loaders on the M series but later found out they arn't. The lift at bucket center on the LA854 loader is 1874 pounds. The lift at bucket center on the LA1153 loader at the power position is 2536 pounds. So you gain a whopping 662 pounds of lift between the loaders on the L5740 and the M6040. Also I think the M6040 comes with a remote hydro valve standard. All that being said my L5040 with the LA854 loader is VERY strong and has no trouble at all lifting a heaping bucket full of wet gravel......but then its capacity is only 10.9 cubic feet. The capacity on the bucket on the LA1153 is a much greater 19.43 cubic feet. So as you can see you gain a great deal going to the M6040 and that makes it a "great deal".....if you don't mind shifting gears.:D

Yes, I think you were right. I was looking at 2500 lbs at the pivot pin. I didn't realize the were stated differently. That does make a difference.

I have a sod farm, I would be moving around pallets of sod (1500-2100lbs) with it when I dont have a piggyback forkilft around

M gives you bigger front tires, and smoother longer wheelbase, but much poorer turning circle. You get planetaries in the rear, but I've not had any problems with the spur gears and many other ag tractors use spur gears.

The L is more suited to either slower speeds or smoother ground, tight precise loader work such as landscaping and other things where the HST lets it shine. The M is more targeted towards ag work, more comfortable bumping along in a field etc.

The Grand Ls are strong but if you compare the two side by side the M is bigger with more ground clearance and more capacity front and rear.

Remembered another difference. The M loader has the European style quick coupler. Not my favorite since it limits your attachments that are readily available. Now maybe you can get the SSQA on it too I don't know.:)

Here in Canada you can't get SSQA on the M. Both the LA 1153 and M20 loaders which come on them have the Euro QA which I believe is common in the farming world.

I've been pondering the GL5740 vs the M7040 as well and keep going back and forth. Because of the strange tax situation in Canada, the M7040 is considered a farm tractor since it is just over the 60hp PTO limit and is not subject to 13% sales taxes. That means the GL5740 prices out evenly or slightly more expensive than the M7040. The GL4740 prices out within a couple of k to the M7040. That is tilting me in the direction of the M with it being so much more substantial.

The HST+ on the GLs really is quite nice though.

I think you will WANT that bigger loader on the M for sod.

In Canada we now have the M20 loader available from Kubota which has a higher lift capacity than the LA 1153. It is made by ALO and sold and branded as Kubota. Not sure if these will be available soon in the USA or not.

Not likely, Kubota canada is separate from the US, only recently did the US made LA series loader show up here. Most dealers still don't use them in the east.
