We put about 900 SF in our house about 2 years ago (including kitchen, laundry room and second bath). We went with an 8mm "board", but put 1/4" cork underlayment under it first. The cork totally kills the tick-tick sound and the floor stays warm in the winter. The cork is available online and comes in 2x3 sheets.
The only downside so far is that the golden sometimes "spins her wheels" when she decides to take off fast.

You ought to see our Chihuahua trying to take off fast. And when we first had the laminate installed, she also hurt herself a couple of times because she couldn't get stopped and slid into a door facing pretty hard.
