Land leveler with rippers or box scraper

As far as grading scrapers go, I think that Befco has the best bang for the buck. Michigan Iron & Equipment is a dealer.

That's the shortest I've seen. Looks like about 3 feet on the ground.

Priefert was the longest. I've seen 6 and 7 ft. and they seem about as long as wide.

I wonder how their grading results compare.

It would be nice if you could combine the heavier rigid frame of the befco with the longer skid design of the Priefert.

I have built two lpgs so far and the next one will be wider 14' with skids 8' long. Just need it to fit on a trailer to move legally.

What do you pull a 14' wide LPGS with?!

I've thought about trying to "rig" up some way to put a 2x8 (or whatever) extension on the skid. Some sort of pocket, or clamp, or bolt, or something. I'm not sure, really. I know it would wear down quick, but it would probably only be needed "once" to get things straightened out.

I built a 10'w by 9'l land plane. I love it. The extra length allows it to smooth great. I'd rather have my land plane than box blade I think

I agree with Richard.

I have both and I think the BB is better suited to all around work and even spreading topsoil on your lawn carefully of course. Easier to back up to a wall too.

Invest in a top and tilt kit if you don't have one, your life will be almost complete, Fred

I'm glad you mentioned that. I hadn't noticed how short the Befco was. My Landpride is about 3'8" long and I wish it were longer and 500-600# heavier.

Long is nice for leveling a yard and on straight roads but not so good if you have bends or hills. I have the BEFCO and I wouldn't want longer for my uses. But it's hilly around here and I find even the BEFCO almost too long for my use. When leveling my yard I'm often trying to avoid hitting trees as I turn. But everyone's needs are different. I've never had an issue where it wouldn't smooth out washboards or pot holes of any size. I got a 6' simply because most of my driveway isn't more than 10' wide. With it I can do a little more than 11' with two passes (one down and another back). Going wider wouldn't of saved any time and weight is your friend so unless wider has enough extra weight to equal the same pounds per foot it'll actually be less productive.

I borrowed a box blade for a couple years before buying a grading scrapper. Now things are reversed. The two friends who let me use their BB now are always borrowing my GS. In fact one of them just sold his BB because he didn't use it anymore. The way I see it is it's like a hammer. A box blade is like a framing hammer, when framing a house it's the right choice. But once the house is built it's not really the right tool for maintaining a house.

A 15,000 lb. tractor should work for a 14' lpgs.

I would think a 2x10 added to your existing skids should work long enough to smooth a few acres.

I can see your point that longer and larger won't work well in your scenario. But there are some good uses for a larger lpgs. I already have a 4' and an 8' which get a lot of use, I could also make good use out of a much larger 14' model. For my field work uses I need to make the entire field flat and planar with a very slight slope in one axis. While I laser grade the field as best I can having a large lpgs will help with averaging out the surface much better than a small lpgs.

The current design I have is about 3200 lbs so that's is 228lbs./ft of width. If I build it I will post pictures here.
