Land plane & box scraper from a box blade.

Land planes seem to be more rare around here and I never could find a good deal on one but did find a Howse box blade for $350. I cut the 3 point attachment and rippers off the box and mounted the blades on 6x6x.375 angle iron. Mounted to side plates with slotted holes punched in it for adjustment. The hitch on the rear is to attach a roller, so I can bring the rocks to the surface and level but push them back down so they don’t get scattered to the sides of the road.

The sides are 3/16 steel with 1/4x2 flat strap around the perimeter. There is another layer that bolts to the bottom, so it can be replaced when it wears out.

It works great and I probably could have saved some time and just welded the blades 1/2” below he skids because that’s where they stay.

That said, they don’t “move“ material as much as they smooth it, so I built a box scraper out of the remaining box. The rear blade floated on this one and I used that portion as a sort of swing arm. I originally pulled it with a machine that didn’t have hydraulics or 3point so I used an electric trailer Jack to adjust blade height and a load binder to adjust blade angle.

Using it with a drawbar on 3 pt, it too could be fixed as blade height is controlled at the hitch vs using the Jack.

Thanks for posting! Ive long been thinking about how best to turn an unneeded (duplicate, already have another) box blade into something like a land plane with an adjustable roller/rake on back. Always love to see others’ ideas and accomplishments. Nice work!
