Squirrels or chipmonks filled the area under the plastic guard/belt cover with nuts. He thought a squirrel chewed the belt. Now he is leaving the belt cover off. The belt broke first use. He bought the mower at auction and thought it was new and unused. It sat in his barn over the winter. He has it on the back of a Ford 600 series tractor.

Another often overlooked matter is rust on the pulleys.

Rust will greatly accelerate belt wear and breakage.

Kubota recommends for storage the mower the belt is removed and the pulleys cleaned to help prevent rusting.

Thanks, good advice. The mower had been bought at auction and looked new, maybe unused, but set all winter in a barn. Pulleys were not rusty when we put the new belt on.
