Gordon, I think you nailed it. I think on the second grading I didn't cut deep enough to totally eliminate the washboard, and I'm still feeling the original bumps. The gravel is pretty soft yet, the grader isn't having any problem cutting to depth. It is breaking up and there are no chunks going over the back blade. It seemed to be flowing evenly to my eye on the second grading rather than the waves on the first grading.

We got some rain, so I think I'll let it dry out for a few days and hit it again with the 1/4" depth and pack again.

My driveway lost it's crown a couple years ago. It's all downhill from the yard to the county road. A couple heavy rains really did some damage. It's looking pretty good now but I still have a couple spots where I have a secondary ditch at the edge of the gravel. I really don't want to bring in the sod and mess up my nice gravel, so I guess my options are to add more gravel or grade the shoulder into the ditch. Thinking one of those power landscape rakes would be ideal, ha.

Edited to add. When I used the height control there was enough slop in everything so the back of the LP was still on the ground. It just lifted the front blade.

Take a look at road graders...wheels are in front AND behind the blade. Putting the blade on the back of your tractor doesnt give you any depth control, every time you hit a bump up front makes a new bump out back. Your bouncy rubber tires exaggerate the effect giving you a nice washboard surface.

My workaround was to weld extension bars and a light duty (1500lb) trailer axel with golf cart wheels onto the back of my blade. I use my top link to control the blade depth. I also welded end plates perpendicular to the blade profile to act as a mini box blade, it keeps the spoil in front of the blade and prevents it spilling off the sides.

For pancake smooth gravel I set the blade up on a smooth concrete floor so it just touches the floor. This lets the blade cut high spots but it cant cut below grade. Recently I added a hydraulic top link and its the bees knees for finish grading and feathering. Much better fine control then the 3PH alone.

I know exactly what you mean about the 3 point blade and that's why I went to the LP. I have a 7' King Kutter, I am thinking about adding tail wheels and tilt hydraulics.

I hit it with the land plane and rolled it again a few days ago and the washboard is gone. We got 4 1/2 inches of rain last night and I didn't have any washouts. I'm a happy camper.
