I have a Land Pride RC1548 rotoary cutter on a B2920 Kubota. It's all brand new and I've never used the rotary cutter. I pulled the shear pin out to see what size/type it was. It looks like a 3-1/2" long 1/2" dia bolt with no head markings. I assume its a grade 2.

Should I go back to the dealer to get some spares? Or can I just use off the shelf grade 2 bolts as replacements?

Thanks for any help,
Howard

Just wanted to say that I think that's a really good mower, I had one when I used to have my JD750. I bought it used and got great service out of it for the few years that I owned. I think the previous poster gave you great information on the shear bolt. Good luck with it!

Standard bolts are usually grade 5. You'll like have to get grade 2 bolts at a dealer. If you can't find grade 2 machine bolts easily you may be able to use carriage bolts, some of which are often grade 2.

I had a hard time finding 5/16" grade 2 bolts for my snowblower, even at dealers. My rotary mower uses 1/2" grade 2 bolts which were easier to find at a dealer.

24. 802-264C HHCS 1/2-13X3 1/2 GR2 For shear bolt PTO only

Thanks for the info. I have the printed owners manual and had actually found that part and read it. But I didn't know the "GR2" meant grade 2.

Thanks again for help and schoolin',
Howard

Thanks for the info from your experience. I bought it mainly to mow/clear in the woods; so I wanted something pretty small that I could get through the trees.

Thanks,
Howard

You should be able to buy grade 2 bolts at Lowes, Tractor Supply or a hardware store. I have seen some shear bolts (mainly in snowblowers) that are 5/16" and the have a groove in cut in them to make them 1/4'', like these here. If it is just a regular bolt a hardware store bolt should work fine.

I had the 60" version, I always used off the shelf unmarked bolts, worked great. Broke LOTS of them!

Yes, the unmarked bolts are grade 2, 3 dashes = grade 5, and 6 dashes = grade 8. I found it very difficult to find 5/16" grade 2's for my three point snowblower at local farm equipment dealers, big box hardware stores, and local bolt specialty shops. I finally found them online at a wholesaler and through their dealer list got them at the one local farm equipment store I had not checked. Part of the difficulty was the 5/16" size that I gather is relatively uncommon as opposed to say, 1/2".

My local big box stores such as Rona, Home Depot, Cdn Tire, Home Hardware, mainly sell grade 5 and perhaps some grade 8's. Even the local fastener stores(BC Fasteners, Bolt Supply in Calgary, Acklands) here don't seem to carry grade 2's.

Here's a table showing shear strengths:

View attachment Bolt_Shear_Strength.pdf

The 1/2" grade 2 bolt the OP mentioned has a shear strength of 8,717.5 lbs. while a grade 5 bolt's shear strength is 14,136.5 lbs.

Last year my neighbour "temporarily" used a grade 5, 5/16" bolt in a blower like mine instead of a grade 2. The result was a bent auger after picking up a rock. He is a machinist and was able to fix the auger on his press.

The main point is to use the size and grade shear bolt the manufacturer specifies.
