Here are some pics of my back yard. After I move all the wood and branches out I have about 30 2ft+ stumps to remove then topsoil and seed in the fall. I am also going to rent a chipper to get rid of all the crap 4" and under on my property. I removed about 50 trees then paid someone to do the last 20 or so big ones. Does he wood I keep have to be covered immediately
to prevent it from rotting?

Donn, are you keeping wood as in future firewood?

I am not sure if I will use it for firewood later or not. Thanks

Reason I ask is if it's going to be used for firewood, you want it to "weather" and dry up with the summer months so leaving the wood exposed is good for that purpose.

Looks nice. Be careful digging those stumps. Some of them are going to be in the root systems of trees you want to save. Might consider a stump grinder for the health of the other trees.

I agree with MarkV, it does look nice and I would consider a stump grinder rather than digging. Also, be careful with fill around the other trees. If you cover their roots, they will not do well.

donn12,

If you had the time and patience, A burn barrel set up would take care of all the trash.

I have a BearCat 3ph chipper, with blower, and it does a real good job also.

Good point about too much backfill. I think the rule of thumb is no more than 4 inches over the root structure. I ended up making that mistake on a difficult site I have before I knew better. Ended up covering 1/2 to 2/3's of the drip line on some oaks with 12" or better with soil. It took 6 years but they are dead or almost there. It would have been much easier to remove them at the time than it will be now.
