As far as width. where I used to live in Fla, the road was on the county line and neither county wanted to maintain it and there were only about 4 ranches on it, so someone made up a drag out of railroad ties at least 8 ft wide and we pulled it with cars and trucks all the time. whenever it would get to bad, someone would hook on and drag it up and down a couple times then drag it back to it's parking place beside the road. Of course the road was pure sand and moved easily but be sure to not get spinning and keep on moving or you'd spin in to the axle.
As far as long or short, the reason for the long wheelbase on construction graders is they bridge over the humps to cut them off and over the hollows to fill them in over a longer distance to make a smoother surface and better ride. The shorter the wheelbase, the choppier.
