I am considering purchasing a landscape rake. I am seeing both on the web. What has been the experience of the experts out there in TBN land? What are your comments about which you think is the "best"?

I have a 3PH Landscape rake. I have never used a pull behind landscape rake. But used to have a pull type disk harrow. Purchased a 3PH disk. I can now get into the corners and tight spots that I could never back the pull type into. I sure the 3PH landscape rake will work the same.

I would think that a 3pt rake would be more maneuverable and you have plenty of tractor to use a 7’ or 8’ one. There are many times that I use position control to set the rake so that it just hits the high spots, don’t know how the adjustments work on a pull type. I’ll also put in an endorsement for gage wheels on the rake. I found them pricey but they sure do make a difference when doing a final grade or moving loose gravel.

Vernon,

How big of a rake are you considering?
I have a pull behind 4' York rake that I really like but like MarkV said, gage wheels on any selection will be a great benefit. I like the pull behind mainly because I can pull it with anything that'll accept a pin. I normally use an ATV.

I personally have never seen a "pull behind" landscape rake for anything other than a riding mower or an ATV. I can't quite see them being heavy duty enough for your Kubota.

Or are you perhaps confusing rakes with with gauge wheels as being the "pull behind" type? These are TPH rakes too, with the gauge wheels simply adding an extra degree of level control unavailable with their "no-wheel cousins"

I am thinking of getting a 6' rake. Land Pride makes their 15 series in a pull behind a 5' and 6'. LP is more expensive but I have always found that in the long run I usually save money by going for quality.

In my clearing project I find that as I move the cut brush to the burn pile, there are dribs and drabs of twigs and short limbs dropped on the way. I am figuring that a rake would help gather these up as well as dress the churned up soil when I finish. My place is sandy land so a rake would be sufficient for dressing it smooth.

You have a point that I had not thought of about being able to back with control. That is why I put the question to this group.

Thanks

Another one you may not have thought about is the width of the rake when operated at an angle. Most folks like the rake to cover their tire tracks, and Kubota says yours is adjustable up to 58". I don't think you'll be happy with a five footer.

I'd recommend you consider a rake that is wide enough to cover your Kubota tracks when it is being used at it's extreme index angle. My KAMA track for example, is 66.5" - and I use an 84" rake.

Being able to back up accurately is one thing I treasure with my 3PH rake. I can get right back to the fenceline, and rake out the brush and leaves.

I should add that I have a 7' Land Pride landscape rake. Added a set of gage wheels last year. Sure made a difference in how well rake works.
Somewhere I saw price on a pull behind land scape rake was higher than a 3PH in this size.

Nobody mentions York Modern when suggesting landscape rakes. I spent my first 30 years living just 5 miles from their manufacturing plant in NY. All the towns in the surrounding area had towed York rakes for maintaining the dirt roads.
