Landscape rake for removing rocks?

I have a Cat 1 Fred Cain Landscape Rake. The tines are individually adjustable for any spacing you like or can easily be removed. It is a 6' rake but I removed enough tines to make it about 50" so my BX2230D could pull it easier. To be honest, iit is really a bit too big for my small tractor.

To help remove rocks I removed every other tine for the first few passes on my bare lot to get the bigger stones into piles, removed those, then put the tines back on to get the smaller stones. I do have the gauge wheels but only used them later to help spread top soil at an even depth. At the time I really did not have enough experience to know how to properly use them! It's a very useful tool to prepare for seed.

Hope you have a place to put the rocks! I could not believe how much rock came out of a 1/2 acre piece of land!

Thanks for posting about the Fred Cain landscape rake, I have not seen any that were adjustable before and will take a look.

Here is a pic of it right after I bought it used. It's very heavy! The gauge wheels are not installed in this pic. They are made in Danville, KY.

Purchase a Landscape Rake proportioned to your tractor.

If you buy a rake that is too heavy overall, the tines will be too heavy to flex and you will have functionally a Rear Blade, rather than a Landscape Rake. The tines need to flex/lift passing over the ground for a Landscape Rake to work as designed.

In my experience 60"/300 pounds is max for a BX.

While I have not owned a Fred Cain implement the brand enjoys an excellent reputation.

I agree it's a bit too big for my tractor but it does work. ;) I just remove tines as needed. The only true complaint I have is the tractor has trouble lifting it high enough to not drag when transporting it. I am looking for a shorter top link that could be used to tilt the rake up when transporting. I would trade it for a smaller one but the neighbors borrow it every year to use on their M8200 Kubota!

Mr. D.E.,

You are entirely welcome, I only hope to help.

I have had fresh water aquariums, and they could be hard enough, add salt water AND a reef environment and I can understand the need for help.

I have now also joined the welding web, because I have aspirations of learning to weld at least well enough to repair (and maybe fabricate) implements for our toy, errrr tractor.

I certainly empathize with the gotta get er done mindset and feeling the need to justify the purchase of the big tool.

We have kinda moved past that now, and I bet you soon will too, because the scope of what you will find the tractor helpful, if not priceless for, is only limited by your imagination.

Having ours has made life easier in so many ways, while saving our backs and knees in the process. We initially bought it mostly for mowing, some landscaping, and gravel driveway maintenance, but have used it to help put in our window air conditioners, process fire-wood, re-roof a shed, put in fence posts, clear away brush piles, move all manner of materials from lumber to unloading our palleted wood splitter from our truck and loading garage sale items into it.

Those are just the highlights that I remember.

It is also important to have adequate ballast on your 3-pt for FEL work and generally to prevent tipping forwards, so start thinking about how to add compact weight there, if you haven't already done so.

Take care, and have a nice weekend.
Thomas

Any pics of the box ends? Did you add to both sides? I think I am going to need the ends clear at least until I reasonably clear the hand size boulders. Pretty rocky NW soil.
Yes I made plates for both ends...I mostly work with a road that has a river rock base...when working in the areas that are most susceptible to erosion I use #4 crushed granite (sometimes 57's , same as crusher run without the fines) for a base and top it with crusher run...the rake works great and the box ends eliminate extra passes to clean up the spoil rows...here's a pic...

I am still interested if anyone uses gauge wheels if they have hydraulic tilt for the 3ph...

I still use my gauge wheels. I keep them at the same setting and adjust my top link/ 3pt hitch height to vary the depth. The only issue becomes that you change the angle the tines are attacking the soil, but I haven't found that to be a problem yet.

I was referring to the lateral pitch of the rake using the hydraulic side link...
