NOW THAT i am retired would like to do some landscaping around the old place, anybody know any site that might be helpful? such as which shrubs are good for certain climates, which grow slow , which dont get to tall. which plants need sun, which do not ? etc.

I'd say hit your local nurseries weekdays midday when they are least busy. Take some pics of your property and sketch out what you are thinking about.

My wife has done this and always gets lots of geat ideas.

Best Wishes,
Ron

My wife found software called "Instant Landscape / The Ultimate Home" at WallyWorld I believe in the $20 range...

Tells about climate, conditions, soil, etc. of several hundred different common landscape materials, and lets you merge included pictures in with a picture of your home/property...

Includes water gardens and even interior capabilities...

I sure wish I had found this and not her, then I wouldn't be so far behind on the "Honey-Do" list as I am today!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Check for a book similar to the "Sunset Western Garden" book. Sunset is a west coast mag which publishes garden and patio kinda stuff; there must be similar ones for the midwest and east.

It has maps of the western states, showing all the growing zones(finer detail than the USDA zones). You find what zone you are in, and the look at the plants based on your zone. The book has an extensive library of plants with descriptions and lots of pictures. It is really a handy reference. It gives plant colors, expected growth patterns for height and width, ect.

Yours may be "Country Living" or tied to "Southern Living" or something like that. If we remember, I'll pm you.

One more...

Check with your local Unicersity extension for thier Master Gardener program. You can find out great info there. They will be able to tell you all that information, refer you to books, ect. You might find them through your local Dept. of Agriculture extension too
