Don't discount a Johnny Bucket. They turn a garden tractor into a pretty handy machine. You could get a Craftsman Garden tractor ,Johnny Bucket,GT box blade, wheel weights and a garden cart. you can get a lot of work done with a setup like this and still come in at around $5500.

The GT is what I am leaning toward. A full feature FEL is handy for lift height and capacity but the Johnny Bucket does move dirt. I was just quoted $175/weekend +$125/delivery of a CUT with FEL and one PTO/ 3pt attachment ...eg. scraper... from a local rental co.

Tractor shopping is the most humbling experience......

Renting does a few things for you besides getting work done...

You get an opportunity to try a particular machine for its size and maneuverability, you get to see how well it tackles the jobs you have for it, and you get to see how machines hold up to hard use.

I rented a Kubota TLB to put in my pool. It did what I needed it to, and I also got a chance to see just how little use I would have for a backhoe of my own.

I really think you and your wife should test drive this one, but only if others here agree that it might be a good deal...

CUB CADET LOADER

I'm going to check it out. Looks well maintained and could be the ticket.

XSKIER: That 1026R you have is the real deal, it was very interesting what the JD Sales guy was saying about the options list on the small models X700 series vs the final cost. He claims he sells 50 1023/26 for every 1 series 700 tractor. The 1026R had the seat off and that transmission looks like a beast.

I just stopped into a local JD dealer and was advised against the X700 series if Hydraulics were fitted based on the price comparison to the 1 series SCUT. They had a 1026R on the floor and it is a beast of a machine for sure, a real tractor but I think way too much for my needs. I'll look for a used GT and go from there.

The 1026R may be a little better for the landscape work but the x749 I have will be better for the mowing imo. The mowing is what you will be doing for the most part when the lawn is completed.

Here is what I use to work up a lawn, started this new project today. Started pulling stumps with the hoe and unloaded the other tractors. With the mower deck removed the mower gets around pretty well. It is more efficient to use larger tractors for the initial work and buy a smaller machine for your maintenance and mowing needs.
