Landscaping: Wood chips or rocks? Edging?

They may not be popular up north, but pine needles do well around here. No problems with termites and it looks good. Although most people replenish yearly to keep a fresh look.

I have both. The rock garden has the cacti in it, the flower beds have wood mulch.

As far as mulch goes, I only use Cypress and Pine bark mulches and I have never noticed termites in the mulch or the ornamental wood we have in there. I like the mulch since it will compost down and build the sandy loam I have. I put a top coat on usually in the Spring, but mostly for the color.

Rocks rock! :)

You don't have to re-mulch every year, weeding is less and zero termite risk.

As for the edging, look at some of the box stores. They have products in a varity of colors. Some have a lip and it is easy to stack them and they hold their shape when bumped. I wouldnt use wood with the stone, stick with stone on stone. I have even bought molds off ebay to cast my own edging(has a celtic knot pattern).

Big advantage of wood chips is you can make your own. It doesn't look quite as pretty as the store bought stuff but it's free and I easily get enough mulch to refresh the planting beds and trails every spring when I chip the winter windfall.

Wood chips, mulch is a buffet for termites. Both get wet and rot, candy for the critters. Been around too many home inspectors/termite inspectors and seen the damage first hand.

My wife is the gardener but both of us hate woodchips, free or not. We just stick annuals in any exposed dirt. Its hard to plant them in 6" of woodchips....
For edging we find that nothing beats used bricks, installed so the top is flush with the dirt. That way I just run a lawnmower wheel along them and cut back the flowers AND grass at the same time. Make your bends gradual enough and you won't even have to bring out the weed whacker...
