Diesel is lighter than water. A large vessel like this has such a volume to surface area ratio that filled with diesel it would still float.

Note; The weight of a large ship tends to follow the surface area (square of the size) while the cargo carrying space goes with the cube of the size. Therefore the larger the ship the greater load it can float percentage wise compared to its unladen weight. A large ship made of steel could be entirely filled with diesel and still float very well indeed.

If enough of these monsters are put to sea with heavy loads, each displacing its own weight in water (see also, Archimedes) it will raise the level of the Earth's oceans and contribute to an even earlier and more severe ecological disaster than Global warming alone.

...BUT it won't take off no matter what sort of conveyor belt is employed!

Hi,

Slow speed marine diesel engines are usually started with compressed air, through specially timed air start valves (air admitted after TDC, to push the pistons down to start rotation.). Obviously these engines would require large quantities of air and they have specially designated "start air compressors" for this purpose (high pressure, high volume). The air compressors usually electrically driven and suitably sized - probably three in number.

These large engines can run with one or two cylinders not firing - lift the fuel pump to prevent fuel going to the injectors. Newer engines use pneumatic controls (air cylinder) to lift the cam follower off the camshaft and hold it there. No repairs can be done with the engine running as there are no disconnects to the pistons. connecting rods etc. And yes, just the piston, piston rod, crosshead and connecting rod constitute several tons in weight - possibly as high as 15 or 20 tons for the ship mentioned - and that is per cylinder unit.
