Last Man Standing

Here is a little synopsis of the outside forces that led to the defeat of the 1999 voter referendum on CCW.

Handgun Control, Inc., saw this as their test case before the elections in 2000 to exercise their political influence[3] and lobbied hard to defeat the referendum.[4] Political notables included the Clinton/Gore Administration[5] with Attorney General Janet Reno playing a secondary role to Hillary Clinton's activism, Governor Mel Carnahan and his daughter Robin Carnahan, the 1994 appointed[6] Secretary of State, Rebecca Cook,[7] and State Auditor, Claire McCaskill.

Robin Carnahan chaired the Safe Schools and Workplaces Committee (SSWC) and orchestrated television ads against the proposition. Also, on the weekend prior to voting day, that organization coordinated the taped phone message from Hillary Clinton to automatically dial 75,000 homes statewide with the message, "just too dangerous for Missouri families.

Back in 1999, we had a voter referendum on allowing concealed carry in Missouri. If failed by a narrow margin. Tons of money was spent to defeat the referendum from out of state sources. "Blood will run in the streets", "it will be like Dodge City", Shooting in the streets will be commonplace (I guess like they are in Chicago now). Anyway it was defeated by propaganda. But in 2003 the legislature passed CCW anyway. "Blood will run the the streets.. etc, ad nauseum. " Of course nothing like that happened. I got a permit. :) So in January of this year, the no permit required law went into effect. "Blood will run in the streets" they said... People in opposition of self defense never give up and they sound the same decade after decade.

You mean nobody used the "wild, wild west" analogy? Around here, that's pretty much a standard line.

Your state is seriously considering it. There is the usual fight of course. I believe there are 12 or 13 states now that don't require a permit.

WV passed 'no permit required concealed carry' about a year ago... no riots insued, no spike in crime of note, no blood running in the streets... open carry has always been legal, I carry both ways depending on the situation. Just another tool on my belt, beside my Leatherman and minimag flashlight.

Back on topic, the show in question does a great job of tastefully trying to dispell the 'oh my God it's a gun!' reaction from those not comfortable around them. I hope it can find a new venue and continue to air.

I would like to thank each and every one of you guys that signed or hopefully will sign the petition. Thanks to people like you, so far there are over 372,000 supporters on that petition in just 9 days. Personally I am not looking to demand ABC saves the show but instead let them know that several of us agree with the show's viewpoint rather than theirs. I am happy to read that the show is looking for a new network. Hopefully they will find a new home and perhaps take a bunch of sponsors and their money with them

I have never seen the show, so I don't know what it stands for, so I did not vote.
I like Tim Allen, but the home improvement rif got old for me.
I thought his Star Trek knock off film "Galaxy Quest" was great.

Several years ago in SC you couldn't conceal carry in any business that served alcohol. For years a bill was introduced to change that so that you could but you couldn't drink or hang around the bar. One Senator kept blocking the bill in committee. He was finally voted out and the bill as able to be passed. When the bill was passed there was a lot of talk about the night time entertainment areas (mostly bars) would be like the wild west, and it still hasn't happened.

Also, if that was a vote on an odd year when not much else is being voted on, that probably helped defeat it. Municipalities here like to get things passed by having elections on odd dates when there's nothing else going on. The state legislature is trying to stop that.

I have read your posts and am impressed with your insight and maturity. I do not, however, share your degree of pessimism. I have seen evidence that we have some very bright, right thinking youngsters coming up and believe that there is hope. Ignorance seems to be the main problem; and as long as the liberals are in control of our education system, we do have a lot to overcome.
Interesting take on the situation...just imagine growing up in an era where your "competition" for a job refused to get their hands dirty or hated the idea that the employer might make a profit. Add to that now with legal weed where showing up for work is somehow optional...an observant kid would be able to sense/exploit the opportunities that I never had but I think a kid today does.
