Just curious (since I recently purchased a nice sprayer for use on my lawn and pasture) - what is the latest one can spray for weeds, etc.? We're starting to get some cool evenings here (40's) in central MN, but the days are still warm. I have been told that it is good to put down a coating prior to fall and then again in the spring. I did the spring, but due to business travel have not had a chance to do a fall coating...

Any thoughts? thanks!

If the weeds have already gone to seed, it is too late. The spray will not kill the seeds. Only pre-emergent in late winter will take care of those. Or a spring spraying after they germinate. If you have some that have not gone to seed, then you should spray them before they do.

Check with your local University Ag extention office. Or check with your local garden supply for a "Master Gardener" program. The Master Gardener program is a program run by the state university and is available in most area's across the country. My wife volunteers in the program here in Placerville, Ca.

Either office would have info on the conditions in your local area, the weed types present, and the best way to control them.

They will have lots of other good garde, tree, pest kinda info too. It is a really good resource.

Bob,

I think your weather is probably similar to ours here in Central New York. This is probably the best time of year for weed control. I am planning on doing it tonight or tomorrow depending on the wind conditions. The experts locally say late September until the middle of October is the best.

FYI, the fall is also the best time to fertilize. My last fertilizer goes down around the first week in November. Just after the grass has stopped growing. The beginning of September is also good for fertilizer. Fertilizing this week would cause too much new growth but fertilizing as soon as the grass stops growing will cause the energy to be stored in the roots for the winter.

Good Luck,
Kevin

Thanks for everyone's feedback. If I can get a nice day with little wind, I'm definately going to get it done. Lately it's been windy every darn day... oh well.

Thanks again for the help!
