Mark, All of the posts regarding watering techniques, possible grubs, ect... are sound advice. I just want to add that before spending any more time and effort, you should call your local Agriculture Cooperative Extension Service and get a positive ID on what's causing your problems. Fungus will look like a grey-white cottony thread spreading in spots, before it kills the grass. For actual fungus, I've always had good sucess with fungicides. You may have grubs or another pest.
