Lawn in a Sand and Gravel Pit?

I live in an area of Michigan known for its sand and gravel pits. My yard will get hard as a rock if it doesn't rain everyday. If I put some water on the ground it will be gone in no time. I am also tired of rocks. My yard consists of whatever will grow in this soil, mostly weeds. I am wondering if I throw down some seed and roll it into the soil after a good rain if it will grow? I would have to lay down so much top soil in the two acres that I would like the grass to grow that I would go broke but would have a lot of fun moving and leveling it out.

I bought a 50 lb. bag of seed at TSC today that is mostly tall fescue. It says that it is heat and drought tolerant and will not brown. I wonder if I spread this around if it will make a difference. Any opinions or experience with this type of problem?

No, fescue will brown in the heat of the summer unless and even then you can keep lot's of water on it. J

I planted some Kentucky 31. It is a fescue & it stays green while the rest of the yard turns
brown. (as a matter of fact, right now).

Thanks. As it turns out that is what I got from TSC last night. It sounds like I got the right stuff.

I don't know how big the area is, but your best bet would be to spred some compost. Most of the top soil you buy is real poor, not that much better then what you had to start. With compost you will build up the soil thats there already. Also it will also cut down the need for fertalizer if you use it.
