lawn mower blades stop spinning

It appears that the blades are firmly attached and there is no obvious damage to any of the pulleys or belts. There is a small crack in the metal piece that goes around the blade. I think it's called the "spindle assembly". Could this little crack be causing my problem?

Actually I think it's called the mandrel housing. It'll take them 2 weeks to ship it to me.

Yes, the spindle housings being broken keep the belt from being tensioned properly. One would think they would be common - even in Ontario!

Thanks. It's not quite as easy in the States, but I'll try calling around to the small machine shops and see if anyone has one.

Find sale(s) of aftermarket parts.... Most mower seem to be made by MTD and all use pretty much same parts.... I can get aftermarket (generic) parts about 1/2 the cost of JD parts and side by side the look identical.... Internet can be big help, and yes there are sale organisations that can export from US to Canada....

Some place on chassis will be a nomenclature tag.... There will be a number like XXX.12345678... The XXX code is who manufactured the mower (by contract) for craftsman/Sears...

Typically the whole assembly is a better way to go, though not always necessary . Many ship with the bolts, but if not there is a 2 out of 3 chance that you will need them.

Thanks a lot for looking this up. It looks like the correct piece, and I ordered one just like it earlier today. The problem is that I can't get the exact part number because I don't have the parts catalogue. I contacted Sears to try to get the catalogue, or any information on the tractor and they said that they don't have anything about it in their system anymore because it's too old. It's only 15 years old, which suggests that Sears doesn't expect their products to last very long and I can't say I'm enthusiastic about every buying a Craftsman product again for that reason.
But this part you suggested (532192870) looks like the right piece and hope it is.

Thank you Dale. I was actually able to get the owner/user manual. I just wasn't able to get the parts catalogue.

Go with the Occam's razor theory.
The shaft key was likely sheared so the pulley is spinning freely on the shaft. Get a puller to remove the pulley, clean up the key slot and pulley slot, then put in a new key. Try this first and spend around a dollar for a new shaft/pulley key, measure so you get the correct size. Some local parts stores will rent you a puller if you don't have one.

It’s probably not a problem with either blade. Otherwise the not damaged blade would continue spinning.
