Florida Man Drowns In Lawn Mowing Accident

Posted: 7:23 am EDT October 19, 2010Updated: 7:25 am EDT October 19, 2010
COLUMBIA CITY, Ind. -- Authorities in northern Indiana say a Florida man died after being pinned beneath a riding lawnmower in a pond at his son's home.

Whitley County deputy coroner C. Taron Smith says 72-year-old Leroy Thomas of Avon Park, Fla., had been cutting grass when the riding mower apparently tipped over into the pond, trapping him underneath.

Smith tells The Journal Gazette that Thomas was underwater for about an hour Monday before his wife noticed he had not come in for lunch on time. Thomas was pronounced dead at the scene near Columbia City, and his death was ruled an accidental drowning.

I am so sorry to hear about that.
Earlier this spring, I had a 42 inch rider, flip over going up a very steep grade, and the front wheel hit a rock, and the mower flipped over backward on me.. all so quick I could not stop it. I threw of off of me and it landed on its side, then I got up and rolled it up onto its wheels, where it took off down the hill by the force of gravity (motor died when the seat switch kicked out). I chased it and caught it, and stomped on the brake with one foot.(glad no-one saw all of that)
I was totally unhurt, but I am a pretty big guy, and not 72 either. Let me tell you these rollover things can happen pretty fast. Be carefull.

Truly very sad. My father in law was close to that age when he put his new JD425 into ten foot of water when he hit the wrong pedal. He was a Navy vet and was able to get free and swim to shore. These things can happen so quickly no matter how experienced you are.

That wouldn't be a good way to go,you might have a min or so to think about of all the dumb things you've done[and survived],this is going to be the last one.
