Lawn Roller

I picked up a 60" lawn roller this past spring. Instead of using water and have to worry about emptying it every winter I am thinking of putting in sand. Is there an easier way other than getting a big funnel and shoveling the sand into the funnel?

Personally i like water in my roller. Loading with sand takes a long time, as you likely know. Plus water allows you to easily reduce the weight if necessary (like rolling in new seed).

If the ongoing maintenance with water is a issue, you could try using a gallon of RV antifreeze mixed in. That would stop the freezing problem.

My brother and I got so frustrated with those cheap rollers springing leaks and rusting out (and if you paid less than $1000 for it, it will!) that he took the two I had, cut a 4"x4" hole with his torch in the side, filled the roller with sand, and welded the peice back on. They worked fine this spring.

I filled mine with sand from some ballast bags I had used in the truck for winter. The sand was wet and I had wait for it to dry so I could load it. It took for ever. I almost used water, but once I got started I wasn't about to let a little sand and water beat me. If memory serves me, it was sand, 1 gallon mile jug with the bottom cut off and steel rod to keep the sand flowing.
