Lawn Tractor Buying Advice Needed: X300 or LA series

/ Lawn Tractor Buying Advice Needed: X300 or LA series #11
When I buy stuff like this, I tend to keep it for 20 years or more. It looks like the X has an oil filter but the LA does not, so that might be a factor in the longevity. It also has a Kawasaki engine which are known to be tough and reliable (I have one on my 20 year old JD 185 that is still going strong).

So if it were me, I'd go for the X.

Hmm, looking carefully at the LA-series brochure I have, it says all of them have an "oil filter" (but I don't know if that means replaceable). They all have cast-iron liners too. Air filters are noted as "paper w/foam."

I need to go back to the dealer again, but does anyone know if the X300 deck includes a wash port like the LA-series do?

Also, how reliable are the electric PTO's vs. manual? Do both styles need to be adjusted regularly? (Yes, this is my first lawn tractor!)

Regarding the oil filter, I was just going by the specs listed on the web site and didn't see it mentioned for the LA, but was specifically listed for the X.

I know some of the lower priced Deere models don't have them, like the "Sabre" line.

I have had the electric PTO on my JD185 with no problems in 20 years. Works great.

Ben, I looked at a LA135 and X300 today they are as the specs say they are. I was misinformed. My appologies. I should have known better. Only you will know what is best for you on the L130. Make sure you listen to the mower deck run before you buy it. Some times the spindles have atendency to go bad and make lots of noise. The owner may have not noticed because it usually happen gradually. Good luck

All LA's have oil filters.

late 2007 and 2008 X300 decks have the wash port standard.

Electric clutches are very reliable and are used in all high end applications.

So what were your impressions after checking both out?

I just came back from the dealer again and compared as much of the hardware as I could. The controls on the X300 were superior, and I liked that the engine shroud covered the entire motor (the LA has 2 open corners where dust and grime can build up). Did I like the X300 better? Sure. Was it (visibly) $1000 better? Well if it was, I probably would have posted "just came home with my new X300!" but obviously I'm still on the fence. :) I guess 2 extra years of warranty are worth something too though.

*Sigh* Decisions, decisions.

One more dumb question. I really like the look of the larger 22" rear tires (on 12" wheels), but didn't have a chance to drive that one to compare any differences in ride quality or control. Are they really better or just cosmetic? Seems like the standard 8" wheel with 20" tire has more sidewall that could act as cushioning. So wouldn't it be more comfortable riding over bumps, etc.? The 1" smaller tires in front would seem easier to turn too.

I work as a salesman for a JD dealer. So I sell both. Usually I say get the best tractor you can afford. In this economy I not only want my customer to be happy but also I don't want them to get caught in a pinch either. use your best judgment and you will be alright.
The X300 does have better controls. It is designed that way to separate the two different series. If you pay more you expect to get more. Have you driven both? It sounds like you really like the X300. If you can't swing it then drop back to the LA. Driving a 48" LA with the 22" tires is not much different then driving a 20" tire. I think you are right on with your assement of the ride. In my opinion the 20" tire rides better. Just my opinion.

The X300 has a steering box which has a little more leverage then the sector pinion set up on the LA. Typically the smaller the contact patch of the front tire the easier it is to turn also.

I would say if your situation is right it is a great deal. If you don't have the time or tools\know how then this is the plan for you. If you like doing your own maintenace then it probably not. I like the way they have the plans set up and MPP is a good one. I belive your dealers price is a little low unless they are running a dealer sponsered special. My price says $449.00 for a LA The dealer doesn't make any money on the initial sale of the plan until the work is done on your tractor. Then JD pays him so much to complete the work on your tractor. It looks like you have read about it. It just depends on what your comfortable with. If you decide to go with an LA and your just worried about warranty coverage then MPP will help ease those concerns.
