But regardless, Craftsman tractors are a very poor product. How many lawn care companies (that stay in business longer than 2 years) use Craftsman tractors? My guess would be very few.

How many commercial lawn care companies buy Craftsman? Thats not what they are built to do. The are aimed at the average homeowner that doesn't want to spend 3-10k on a mower. And for the big majority of those kind of people... they work just fine.

will save yourself time, money and frustration over those buying junk.

Well hey, myself and the other lowly Craftman owners seem to be going downhill fast, from very poor product to junk in just 48 hrs.

By all means, enjoy your megabuck$$ lawn mower, whatever it is. I have no doubt it's an absolutely superior piece of equipment.......that cuts grass.

As for myself and a few million other folks, we can't justify $7k to cut grass. We're doomed to use junk for all eternity.

To each his own opinion and solution. You have yours, I have mine. That's the American way.

Best regards to you and yours,

Ive owned the best craftsman made at the time...Ive worked on dozens and dozens of craftsman mowers.
and they are, without a doubt, JUNK!

They are disposable, simple as that.

I had the 20hp Hydro model in 1998, new. Had nothing but trouble with it. IT burnt a mower belt up in 3 minutes. Wasnt even cutting grass yet. Drove it off the trailor, backed it onto the driveway and turned on the blades, let it Idle for a minute then revved it up and smelled smoke...Turned it off and checked the the belt and it was installed wrong.

Then the engine ran bad (twin) and never seemed to smooth out. Had craftsman come out and they worked on it, and forgot to put the lights back in the hood, and the manifiold melted them.

It went through 3 drive belts in 2 years, and we babied it. After a year the plastic hood broke off by the hinges due to the heat.
Then the steering gear stripped out...At the 2 year mark the hydro trans was all but dead.

Thing costed about 2K...sold it for 50 bucks, running.

Then we moved on, to a JD 425, New. Costed 8K, put a 54" deck on, 48" front end loader, ended up around 13K, all said and done. We punished it for 2 years, moved probably 50 loads of clay, and probably 30 more of sand. Mowed our acre, my neighbors acre, and my aunt down the roads acre (3 acres) for 2 years, and iy never gave us any trouble. never broke a belt, never bent a blade...nothing!
Then a guy made me an offer I couldnt refuse and I sold it with about 400 hours on it.

Then I bought a used 445 (efi) John Deere, put a new 54" deck under it, and put a new loader on it. $3500 for the tracotr, and mower, 2100 for the loader. It had 900 hours on it when I got it, and I put another 450 over the next 2 years, sold it with almst 1500 hours on it, for more than Ipaid for the whole thing, and it never gave us any trouble, other than a broken clutch return spring.

Then I found a nice old 316 JD. Paid 500 for it, put about another 500 in parts and professional paint, restored it. And use it all the time.

Ive had excellent luck with "expensive" mowers. Never had a breakdown, in fact Ive made money using them, and re-selling them!

My 316 has costed about 1000 bucks, and Ill bet it will out perform any $2K craftsman out there, even though it has 1300 hours on it.

Id put MTD over craftsman, seriously! But not murray.

I know some people cant afford those expensive tractors, and big fancy Zero Turn Mowers, but dont knock good equipment.

As you said, to each their own.

dieselsmoke1, I guess we've been pushed into the "junk" pile :). My 12-13 yr old pile of junk suits me just fine. Of course I don't use it every day, but it probably gets abused more than it gets used properly. Other than routine oil changes every 3-4 years and an air filter clean out when I get around to it, I have bought a deck belt once and and a discharge chute that got ripped off.
What a pile of junk I purchased :p

edit.....of course I had to replace a battery twice......this thing is costing me a fortune

I have had 3 craftsmen and they would have to be the biggest pile of junk.I had more trouble with the transmission they most people would have ever had mower with hand clippers.I had a Lt1000 junk, poulan pro junk, and DLT 2000 limted junk then guess what I got smart and brought a JD 2210 and had zero problems with it for 3 years and I did things with that tractor that crapmen would never dream of doing. And I just traded for a new 2006 John Deere 3120 because I wanted more power and I am ownly cut about 1.5 acres of grass.GO GREEN !!! John deere is the ownly why to go think green.

Comparing John Deere to craftsman is like comparing apples to oranges.

A better comparison would be like: Craftsman to Cub Cadet, Craftsman to MTD...

Apples to apples!

Sounds as if you had 3 bad experiences with Craftmen products. No doubt, the odds go up compared to some others. I for one am apparently very lucky and have had 3 good experiences spanning 21 years and counting.

I don't quite understand why someone would purchase 3 consecutive pieces of "junk".

Its nice to see so many people agree with me. craftsman mowers are not ment to mow 2 acres a week for 7 months. Maybe the gt series can handle it longer.
Those of you that say you had a good one thats great when that happens. Sometimes we all get lucky. Being from western pa i can say are terain is not ideal. I have used many riding mowers including many craftsman. Not a john deere though the best was a older cub cadet and bolens. Still going strong. they don't make them like that anymore for cheap. I still say go for the rfm. About the same price a little more for the better brands. You also get the protection of the rops and belt, more power, cheaper fuel cost, and one tractor to maintain.
I have been were your at went through many mowers. Including the push mowers wich in that case i broke down all the time. Know that i mow with a cut theres no looking back. I drive past the broken down 4-5 year old craftsman. Start it up once in a while to hear it run. But without more repairs its useless.

Your post did stir up some responses didn't it? I do agree with some of the posts that said at the low end there are only really cosmetic differences on the machines and therefore the choice comes down to comfort, service, and future parts availability. Once you get past the top of the line Craftsman prices (or the lower end JD) then you really start seeing the difference. One good thing about mid to upper priced JD stuff is the resale value, which is usually pretty good compared with the low end stuff. I have had cheap Craftsmans and had reasonable usage out of them. Yeah, it had some belt problems after 10 years but everything was available for repairs. I never really had any complaints about the "junk" I had I got what I paid for. The average homeowner with an acre or 2 doesn't need a 12k machine to cut once a week. I moved into a larger property, and bought a used high end machine that I'm happy with. Low hour used machines are a good option, at least for me. The top end stuff is made to go thousands of hours.
