What you're doing is exactly what I did on the 4 to 5 acres of church property with lots of trees in NJ.
On my own property, I just use a walk behind mulching mower (and don't mow more than 1/2 acre, which is probably about the limit for walk-behinds). Have done this on 3 different properties. Works fine. I don't rake my own leaves, but I'll pick up 100-150 bags of them that silly other people bag up and leave at the curb. I shred them and pile onto a huge pile for use in my veggie garden and other places.

Our land is mostly wooded with the back of the house having the most concentration of 20 or so large Oaks. I tried mulching the leaves and it worked fine, they eventually disintegrated. The area is almost always in the shade, and as time went on the grass became thinner and thinner. Last year I bought a used Trac-vac I pull behind my 2210, and the grass is much improved. Lazy might be better, but the grass grows better IMHO in heavy shade with the leaves removed.
