Leaf Removal

I've got a Brinly lawn sweepr that I pull behind my Power Trac PT425 with rear discharge mower. The mower is in front of the tractor, and since it rear discharges, the sweeper towed in back works fairly well. I put a rope on the sweeper and the other end up by me, so I just make a pass through the yard, drive to the rear, back the sweeper in, pull the rope, dump and repeat. Works well. In heavy leaves it fills fast, but it beats raking and hand-held or backpack leaf blower for sure. If I had the money, I'd like a leaf vacuum, but I really don't need one.

I usually mulch then use a lawn sweeper

Does anyone use a rotary sweeper? I can't find any videos on YouTube of how well it works.

This is what I always use.

We have no lawn, but a fair-sized area that's mulched and planted around the house. A backpack blower sends the leaves into the woods just fine.

Our quarter-mile driveway with deep ditches is a bit more of challenge. When the leaf fall is light I use the backpack and blow them into the woods. When it gets heavier I pick them up with my 3-point Trac-Vac equipped with a long hose. It dumps fine into a large pile, which after a couple of years are fine compost in the garden.

I used my finishing mower to blow the leaves away from the pecan trees in the yard.(Watch out for low hanging limbs!) Raised it up about 2 feet and went in reverse. It did a good job, Then I lowered it down to about 4 inches and mulched the leaves. It was a lot quicker than using the electric blower.

My Cyclone Rake is ten years old now and the collector bag is still in good shape. It has always been stored in my heated basement, which I think helps a lot. I collected 36 loads of leaves this year, mostly oak. According to CR that's the equivalent of 432 leaf bags! I compost them for mulch or mixing with topsoil for flowerbeds, etc.

It's not cheap, but it has been a good investment for me.

The problem this year seems that the leaves have not fallen in toto. Even though different species drop at different times, the sycamore and soft maple are just stringing it out over several weeks. Heck, it has snowed and the temps have been in the single digits with howling wind and the leaves just keep dribbling down a bit at a time. :confused2:

As the leaves start too fall, I mulch them with the mower. When they get too heavy to mulch, I vac them up with a 880 Trac Vac.
I dump the leaves in pile & let them rot for a couple of years. I then spread them on the garden.

Now that I have the FEL on my BX, I remove leaves with that.

??????????

Doesn't that chew up the grass?

BTW I just use a back-pack blower and send them into the woods. Has to be done every week or two so it doesn't pile up but with tunes in my ear muffs and a beer in the let hand, this is not work.

When I had a leaf blower, I'd just windrow the leaves perpendicular to the woods, then use the FEL bucket on my tractor to push the windrows into the woods. It's a small tractor, so just tip the lip up an inch, put it in float and the bucket slides nicely on the leaves and grass. Very, very little lawn damage.

Once my leaf blower died, I bought the Brinly tow behind lawn sweeper and use that behind my rear-discharge mower. Works fairly well, but not as good as a vacuum attached to a mower deck.
