Being new to the tractor scene and this board I hope I'm not too over bearing with my many questions. Any way here goes another one. The other day after having received a break from the rain and occasional snow here in Va, I was able to get out and test out my 1700d on something other than pushing light drive way snow. I used the blade to do a little light grading, pulled my 16' trailer around moving some square bales, nothing of any definitave hardship. I noticed what appeares to be a small oil leak coming from the bottom side of what appeares to be the exhaust manifold (where the exhaust pipe goes in to the motor.) As well there's a small spot leak coming from a nut on the bottom of the front diff. I couldn't see any cracks. Further there is a very small ammount of hydro fluid at the base of the shifter. No major leaks, just very small stuff. I don't think anything leaks as it is cold. Only duringn operation. Question: should these be of great consern, I was once told that a tractor that does not leak somewhere means it has nothing in it. Which if any should take priority, and how can I rectify the problem? Are these common to the 1700d? Sorry to take up so much space. Thanks for all the great help. you guys are the best. Todd

Don't be afraid to ask questions. If you put them in this Yanmar forum someone should respond within a day or so. (And after a while you will sort out which responders know what they are talking about!)

If you bought it with a warranty then talk to the dealer. He may be willing to do something so you have a completed and satisfactory transaction.

If you bought it private party and no warranty then I would check the related fluids - front axle, transmission, motor oil, then forget about it until at least spring. It's not unusual for a 25 year old tractor to sweat a little oil past the seals. I doubt you will see a stain on the garage floor but until you do, there's nothing to fix.

The exhaust manifold drip is likely rainwater that went down the exhaust pipe while it sat on the dealer's lot. Not a problem, just a 'feature'. If you have an exhaust leak at the manifold, the gasket is a $5 part from one of the dealers who posts here, or match it by eye at your local NAPA.

Wait until you are more familiar with your rig then decide if those issues really need anything done.

Most of all, enjoy your new toy!

There is just a very small bit of spotting on the floor but i think for now it will be ok as i'm loosing only a very miniscule ammount of fluid volume. I appreciate all of the good help and comments. do you know or does any one know if NAPA has a comprable gasket for the manifold and would it be fatal to the already existing one if I removed the cover plate to check the one on there

Most of the people I have dealt with use high temp silicone on the exhaust manifolds. You put it on over the old gasket. It works amazingly well. Very few of the importers " that I have dealt with" replace gaskets. They use the high temp for most of them. Seals, are usually replaced, but installed with a healthy amount of , high temp.

I like the idea of hi temp silicone. I didn't know that since I didn't find any on the old gasket when I rotated my muffler forward.

BTW todda323, the same part# is used for muffler gasket and manifold-to-block gasket.

hey all. i dont know if any one is stiill following this thread but today it was warm enough to do a little work (about40 or so)
any way the leak was still coming from the exhaust manifold. same as befor. i worked it a little harder today so the leak was just slightly more. still not enough to get crazy over and take her to the dealer or anything like that. it appears to definately be ioil, no smell of diesal to it or anything. i did notice that when i worked there was white smoke coming from the exhaust. not an exorbatant ammount or anything but more than would be associated with condensation. this occured mostly as i was going up hill. i upped my rpm to between 1500 and about 2000 while doing some grading. the smoke was not existant after work while going down hill. was wondering what would cause this and if it's of major concern. tractor ran strong no over heating or odd exhaust noise. i have checked the stick for blbow by and taken other basic maintenance and pre op checks and tips recommended here and everything seems to be fine so far. just wondering about the leak and the smoke and if there is any corrolation

It sounds to me, like you may be causing the smoke. And the leak or what looks like a leak to you, may be caused by it to. You are probably lugging it. You should be running at the slowest when working at 1800, better yet around 2200 to 2300 rpms. If you run it too slow, it will cause it to put out white smoke and may cause it to get raw fuel in the exhaust, which with the soot, may look like oil.

thanks for the advice. somewhere i saw some one mention doing a compression test. now forgive my ignorance but i'm pretty new to this and i'm learning as i go but how would i go about doing this. you could be right about the rpm. i just want to cover my bases. is it something i can do myself with a compression gauge?

That oil could be coming from the exhaust, or it could just be a leak in the external oil line that curls around the back of the block and goes up to oil the top of the engine. It enters the top of the head just above the exhaust manifold. You might look there first.

But California, he said he upped his rpms to between 1500 and 2000, so this is saying he is working it at below 1500, so I think that is the first place to look as that is way too slow. As it lugs it will have raw diesel in the exhaust that will mix witht the soot, and it will let out white smoke, at that low of rpms. So I don't think there is anything else to look for, just run it right and it will be fine. No use looking for a problem is there isn't one, and I don't think it has one. They don't generally have that many problems.
