Thanks Fourteen
I drilled out the two vent holes on the cap and so far have had no leakage. Will go your method if this does not work.

Do you have any concern that drilling the holes will bring dirt back into the system?

I am paranoid, but am I paranoid enough.

It seems like the hydraulic tank cap needs some major improvement.

My boat trailer hydraulic surge cylinder has a rubber "balloon" in the cap to allow expansion/contraction in the reservoir without requiring venting (which could allow water into the reservoir). Of course, this reservoir is only about a pint instead of 10 gallons, so the relative expansion/contraction based on fluid temperature is much less, but it seems like a similar concept could be used.

Brake systems have a diaphram or bellows (kinda) for this purpose. I wonder if something is commercially available.

I used only one size larger drill bit than the factory drilled hole which is about the size of a pin head.

I have used permatex also but on a heavier application. It was put through a rough life and held up fine. My tank doesn't leak enough to be that much of a bother. when we used it we didn't use anything under the lid for a spacer, but the metal on the oil tank cover is thinner than what we had. We had threaded bolt holes in the lid to help break the seal when we needed to inspect or make repairs. Using the washers is probably a good idea on this application.

Would it be a good idea to drain a little out of the hydraulic reservoir to catch trash at the bottom. I saw this on a link. I think if you let the tractor sit for a few hours tilted towards the drain hole and then let about a quart of oil out, you would also let out some trash.

Even if you got a gallon or so you could return the oil via a cloth filter to the tank.

I don't know if that would help or not , but I 'll tell you something that I wish My machine had and I have saw it on other machine oil tanks and that is an extra hole in the top of the tank with a plug screwed in it with a magnet rod attached to that plug. That way if there was any metal particles floating in the oil it would catch some of them and you could kinda keep an eye on it to see if any of the components were breaking down. But another way to do that is to split the oil filter open and see what it caught when you change oil. That wouldn't tell you which part was breaking down but would just let you be watching. The magnet would also catch some of the stuf before it hit the filter. That is a round tuit job that I'll never do.
