Well $80 later the new seal is in on the '06 DK45C. Fortunately I bought this giant snap ring pliers set to take a turbo apart with, so I did have the right tool for the job.
So to save the next owner a lot of time doing useless stuff like taking everything completely apart....
Remove the wheel. remove top cap 6 bolts and take off cap ( be careful there are shims in there). Open drain plug and allow to drain. Remove bolts from hub housing and remove outer hub assembly.Remove top bearing, and withdraw vertical shaft. Remove lower gear and bearing (it just lifts up and out, and mind the shims). Attach bar clamp so that the bottom of the swivel assembly is supported by the top of the axle housing; tighten to slightly compress the swivel seal but not so that the two parts are crushing. Reach in with your external snap ring pliers and remove the snap ring that holds the lower swivel on the axle housing. You are going up from below so it may mean you are on your back looking up. Support the weight of the swivel and remove the bar clamp and the swivel will drop off the axle housing. The seal is in 4 parts: two o-rings and two machined rings. Now for the tricky part.
DO NOT get any grease on any contact area between the o-ring and the metal seal. You MUST have the contact area clean and dry or else you will never get the o ring and seal to seat properly. Dry DRY DRYYY!! No greasy fingers!!! If you'll notice, the contact area is intentionally left rough, so that the o-ring "bites" on the seal.
You DO want to grease the inside area of the seal seat. In doing so the o-ring will want to slip just inside the seating area and the seal won't try to crawl up and out ( or down and out ). You want firm even pressure and maybe just a tiny wiggle and the o-ring will go just past the opening and that's what you want. DO NOT try to push it all the way in. Just get it started then take your hands off it. Now that you have both upper and lower seals started count to 100 before the next step. Breathe.
Have your bar clamp ready and handy cz you will need it on this next move. WITHOUT HITTING THE UPPER SEAL, lift the swivel up and onto the axle housing so that the bearings align and seat. With a free hand get the bar clamp back on so that it holds up the swivel. If you have done it right the seals and their o-rings will be shoved up into place as you tighten the bar clamp and snug the two parts together. If not go back and start all over cz you do NOT want to pinch those o-rings. If you did it right you can now install the external snap ring that holds the swivel on the axle and the job is pretty much done. The rest is just putting things back together and filling the axle with oil.
