OK, that might have been a bad idea. I sort of got off on a tangent there when you said you were going to buy truss's. The advantage of a truss is that it will clear span large distances. The negative to them is they are expensive.

I tried to come up with another option, but overlooked the obvious.

Just replace the 2x6's with 2x10's. Put them on 4 foot centers and use the 2x4's on four foot centers on there flat sides.

Overall cost is just the difference from the larger lumber. Sorry for wondering off topic and complicating things.

Roxynoodle, I don't know much about your region. i.e. snow loads, rough lumber availibility, etc. Using the truss plans as a guide I'd built 1/2 trusses from 1" rough stock. It's more the geometry than the stock size that determines strength. I'd use 1x6 for the top cord, 1x4 for the bottom & webs. Placed 24"oc should work well & cheap to build. Mobile homes make trusses from strapping & it works. Kit planes use 1x1 & smaller. The roof & ceiling purlins also add tremendously to the overall strength. It's kind of like why everything is not built post & beam anymore. MikeD74T
