leave a gear tractor in gear on the trailer?

I have my tractor in low gear, low range, and drive it up on the trailer, set the brake and get off the tractor. Then hook the chains on one end, usually the back of the tractor and get back on the tractor, taking the brake off and at "idle", let the tractor drive ahead a few inches until the chains are tight, letting the clutch out at the same time as I shut the tractor off and set the brake.
That has the rear chains really tight, now held in place by compression/brake/chains, now all I have to do is secure the front. I only use binders on the last chains I put on... (I also engage the MFWD if it has it)

I don’t have a geared tractor but if I did I’d leave it in gear. I always set the parking brake. I’ve experimented with the drive the back chain tight method but I’ve found it more work than just using more binders.

I try to chain as close to DOT requirements as possible, but Im no where close to the minimum weight they would even look at. But as to the OP question, tractor in low range first gear in 4x4, brakes tied together so both lock when the parking brake is set, and chain 'er down, and seperate chains/binders for each loader and implement attached, 2 per loose implement if hauling extra.
