leave it running doesn't hurt, but i tend to idle mine up a bit, to about 1000-1200 rpms to ensure significant oil gets to the top of the motor and the fan speed helps keep the temp down a bit. another thing i do is stay away from full throttle operations unless absolutely necessary. my jd 5103 max rpm is around 2300-2400. i bushhog at about 2000 (i use a 6ft b.h. model 286) and set the throttle at about 1500 when doing lite work, like box blade or landscape rake, using the foot throttle only when necessary. i have saved tons of fuel this way and some wear on the motor. i learned this from a long time diesel mechanic/dozer operator that has seen motors run like i run mine versus motors run at max rpm when working. there was a big difference in wear between the two.
