Ownin' up to bonehead move. I left oil filler cap off when adding a small amount of oil. Ran tractor intermittently for a total of maybe 45 mins run time. No oil lost, no oil warning light ( that I noticed ), no over heating. What is the likelihood that I did serious engine damage ? Feelin' real stupid right now :ashamed: !!

you proably had some oil spilled out. If you were running it hard in the woods or dusty conditions, I'd change the oil and filter to be on the safe side. Did you check the oil level after it's been off for awhile? If it never went below the low side of the oil mark, you probably got lucky.

Just don't do it again.;)

oil level never went down not even a drop. No oil splatter out of fill hole. Strange since I did this many years ago when young and dumb on a truck I owned. Oil blew every where and I knew in 5 mins because of the burning oil smell on block. I guess I 'm old and dumb now :) .

Don't tell anyone, put the cap back on, and smile....

Seriously, if the oil level didn't drop, you don't see splatters all over, and you weren't in dusty conditions, everything's probably just fine.

I had the same thing happen several times on my old '72 Blazer... the one with the rubber "pop-in" oil add covers on the valve covers (you know, the ones you had to pound on with your fist to get 'em in when it was cold?)... no problem. Just say "OOPS!" quietly and move on...:D
