After all, how you going to lode it if it's locked! It's ok I get it, they aren't selling tennis rackets.

Seems like a great feature and I went for it because of the 10k lbs pressure since I was having some trouble with a zerk on the front knuckle. The company is great about sending replacement parts but if you can't make the end [ I don't know the correct nomenclature here, the thing on the gun that mates w/the zerk] stay on the zerk. You own an expensive paper weight.

This is the second new `thing' they sent. It has four jaws count `em. It's on a long flexible hose if you don't hold it in place with one hand and position the gun so you can work the handle against your body the grease goes everywhere but in the zerk. `Nuther call to TS and got told `you have to unscrew the thing some put in on the zerk and tighten it so it locks in place.` Put it on the zerk twisted tight and let go to pump the grease. Before my hand got to the handle the `thing' was bobbing on the end of the hose like a starving carp.

Has anyone had good experience with this gun. I have the 50 dollar version, which will soon be heading back to Legacy if I can't discover what I'm doing wrong.

I'm aware this could very well be user error I've been there enough to allow for that. But I'm of at least average intelligence and am not too bad at following directions. I don't see how this thing is supposed to loosen or tighten it's jaws because I turn it on it's mounting threads. There is the feeling of the two pieces mating then the feeling of the bobbing thingus on the hose. Hope some one can wise me up to using the thing.

Many thanks,

Ron

Change the gun for a pistol grip type. I won't use a lever type now, as it needs 3 hands when using a flexi-hose and I only have 2.

I prefer the 10,000 psi lever gun with the LockNLube coupler, only need two hands and no grease leaks around the zerk. http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/oil-fuel-lubricants/304889-locknlube-cupler-grease-gun.html

Bite the bullet and buy a quality battery gun, like the Lincoln, add the lockNlube and you can grease away. Remember that even the best guns won't push through a damaged zerk...Mike.

The tip piece on the end of either a solid pipe extending from any type gun or a flex hose is made of TWO parts. See this example: LINCOLN Coupler, Grease 5852 - G3008573 at Zoro
The left end has flats for a wrench. the tip has knurled grip for gripping to UNscrew and or tighten the tip for fitment onto the zerk, then one snugs the tip by tightening it onto itself.

They unscrew without being attached to the flex hose or pipe, regardless if using a lever or pistol type gun. Once unscrewed enough to be able to loosen or tighten the nozzle end with your fingers THEN screw it onto the flex hose or rigid pipe. Then press the end onto the zerk and snug it up by hand. Then pull the trigger or pump the lever. When done, loosen the end of the nozzle closest to the zerk and it should then be able to remove the gun/nozzle from the zerk

Don't force lots of grease into the center knuckle of the axle unless you want to blow out the seal.

Using a Lock-N-Lube tip on flex or rigid pipe grease guns will make keeping the tip locked on the zerk that much easier.
There is no need for three hands with this attachment.

At the RISK OF BEING obnoxious I will enter this . If you do not lube often you will have this problem . The best solution , which some intelligent OEM did was a relief or groove under the zerk . Those pins and sleeves are tight . Too often the end of the zerk is against the pin . Bingo grease all over the floor ! It is not the zerk or the gun . I grease 54 of them bastards on a backhoe , daily .

In my experience, there is considerable variation in the round ball end of zerk fittings. The original couplings on my grease guns usually worked well enough on the original Kioti zerk fittings but but grease went everywhere when I greased the mower fittings, especially the wheels.

The solution, again in my experience, is the overpriced but very effective Lock-N-Lube coupling. That coupling works on every fitting (so far) with no escaped grease. This result has been posted MANY times by MANY members on this forum. I'm surprised you haven't seen these earlier posts.

I'll second the praise for the Lock-N-Lube! It's worth the money, for sure :)

I think Coyote machine nailed it. It sounds like the OP was loosening the entire tip, not just the knurled nozzle part of the tip.

Yes, LockNLube is great, but his problem and question was more basic than that. It wasn't his grease gun, and how expensive the gun is/was wouldn't matter. It's a technique that needs to be known.

And it sure doesn't help that it takes a big wrench to loosen that knurled tip the first time! Totally unintuitive that it is supposed to move at all.

edit to add: he has this lever gun from Tractor Supply, so yeah, it is just knowing about the knurled tip. And a Lock 'N Lube would make it all easier. ;)

Thanks davrow for the compliment. You nailed it too. When I first started out greasing my tractor, I too was having a hard time with some zerks, especially getting the tip of the gun to remove from the 'captive' zerks on the loader arms. I kept looking at the tip and saying to myself, eventually, why would they go to the trouble to machine a knurled pattern into the tip metal if there was no point in it being there?! Bingo! It unscrews.:duh:

And yes, it should come with directions, which could be as simple as telling buyers to unscrew the knurled section for tip loosening/tightening on the zerk. Again, duh! Such a simple thing, but so much confusion because of no directions whatsoever.:confused2: They could even print it on the box like add milk to cereal to make it taste better.
