You have data that say a person on a bike isn't at risk? I'm not saying the risk would be high but I'm not sure its any less than other activities. I still say its up to a persons own judgement.

I agree, a person should always be in control of the weapon. I goggled the case where the two year hold shot his own mom. I thought it was in Idaho or some place out west. The two year old unzipped a pocket in the purse to get at the gun. Kind of an usual case but still tragic.

I'm big on the second amendment, being a hunter, shooter, and gun owner myself.

Speaking from a tactical viewpoint, it's better for someone to think you might have a gun than it is for them to know you have one, or know you're unarmed. That indecisiveness greatly encourages them to prey on more predictable victims. If they've already decided to attack you or your group, open carry makes you the Number One target of every bad guy out there. As much as I hated the ABC "Study", it did show that a smart bad guy (and there are a lot of smart bad guys and gals) is going to take out the opposition first, before getting on with the rest of the crime spree. Plus, open carry means that I know where I can get a loaded gun for free, if I strike first and without them suspecting me.

Long guns, you don't have much choice about openly carrying. But unless you're on a military or police patrol, all you're going to do is scare the milktoasts in your town.

Just because you have the right to do something, doesn't mean you should. You have the right to stick your hand in the fan blades on your tractor, but who's dumb enough to deliberately do that?

And those who know me here on TBN know I enjoy starting threads here that create a multitude of opinions. My feelings are how will you learn from others unless they disagree with your viewpoint?

I hear ya, on both accounts! :D

People on bikes need a place to keep their gun handy. The gun then obviously isn't locked away and there is a risk, admittedly small, that a kid could grab it while mom is dealing with the bike etc. The mom who was killed in Walmart was not doing anything obviously dumb. She's still dead and her children are motherless. There are risks associated with handgun carry no matter how much you would like to ignore them.

If the OP wants an answer, the answer is quite simply that available data shows there is insufficient risk of violence to a woman while cycling to justify bringing a gun along. That's not a political opinion, that is based on review of DATA. If you have other relevant DATA please bring it to our attention as otherwise you are the one just taking a political stance.

Not everyone has kids!

Show your data where women on bikes, going to, coming from, stopping, and resting are not subject to criminal wrong doing.

I don't believe you know everything about inherent risk in everyone's community, nor do I believe that every kid that comes across a weapon has not been instructed on how to safely handle one...

Certainly you won't bury your tail between your legs and run to the moderator over this post now, will ya?

1) I agree, not every woman has kids or grandkids. Easier decision for them.

2) Neither of us knows the specifics of risk in any community other than our own. However, I was unable to find evidence of risk of rape or homicide for women cyclists anywhere in the USA. India is a different matter.

3) Agree many kids are well educated about not touch guns etc. Sadly there were two cases in the past month where young kids got ahold of handguns and killed siblings. Hard to insure that a two or three year old is going to behave even if trained.

4) Not sure what you are talking about vis a vis moderator. I don't think I've ever contacted one except when I see spam.

I think the biggest risk to a woman cyclist is the same risk to a male cyclist, that being a car on the road.

We have CRAP load of women cyclists all over our roads on the weekends and not once in years have I read or heard of a woman cyclist being murdered or raped just because she was a "woman on a bike".

Yes, over 600 cyclists are killed every year in the USA in bike accidents which is pretty shocking when you consider that only 30,000 are killed in all MVAs which probably includes the majority of the fatal bike accidents.

My "data" about the risk of cycling comes from the book of experience and common sense. Having been involved in cycling for decades, the risks are: crashing for whatever reason, or getting hit by a vehicle. The risk of being robbed of raped while riding is extremely small, from my knowledge and experience. First what do I have to steal that is tempting? I'm wearing Lycra and carrying no valuables. Of course for a woman, that's certainly different. But I'll stand by my previous posts, if you're a woman who wants to minimize the risk, don't ride alone if at all possible. That's not male chauvinism, but just good advice. When my daughter runs, I tell her, stay away from desolate places. Run with a friend. There's safety in numbers. Can anyone disagree with that?

Cycling is risky, dangerous and requires good judgement to reduce the risks. Like wearing bright clothes, choosing routes with little traffic, learning bike handling skills. One makes choices. Sure I have the right to ride anywhere I wish. Alone if I wish. On most highways other than interstates. But to reduce risks, I make wise choices. That's true is all aspects of life.

But in my opinion, carrying a weapon does very little to make you safer on a bike from 99.9% of those things that will hurt you. But everyone has the right to decide that for themselves. As long as you have a legal permit and the skill and knowledge to handle and control your weapon, and the maturity to know when to use it, I'm perfectly good with that.

I usually carry when riding a bike for reasons that I haven't seen mentioned, dogs. They love to chase people on bikes, I haven't been bit yet but I have been worried more than once.

Dodge man, As someone who spent 15 years in a wheelchair and was partnered with a Service Dog, I never once thought of a gun. Not that I don't understand the very real threat. I put between 10-15 miles per day in my chair. Personally, I found a better solution for me that probably is impractical for you. I bought a T-ball bat. Eliminated the threat almost instantly and never had to worry about where the bullet would eventually end up. Never had a second incident with the same dog.
