Leo Frisk came by to visit this week

Yeah, I know. Leo died four years ago a little earlier this month.

At his funeral I pointed out that what Leo did best was he believed in people. Person after person stood up and testified that they were better at something or another because Leo believed in them.

One of the things that Leo pushed on me from the middle of 2002 was he believed I should be a teacher. He constantly told me that I should teach how to make things, that I would be good at it. He told me again and again that I should teach because it was important.

I passed a criminal background check and the local high school wants me to teach some evening classes on metal fabrication my way. Next year they would like me to entertain the idea of teaching night classes and getting paid for it too.

I thought that since I don't have and aren't especially wanting a high school diploma that I could never work as a teacher. Leo worked his way up from helping out with body shop classes to becoming a dean at San Diego Junior College. But that was then and this is now where you need a degree to get a degree.

So as I sat there and read the email from the school I had to think of Leo and smile.

Harvey, Leo was right. You'll be a good teacher. As for the high school diploma, of course I didn't know you didn't have one, but I'm sure you would have no problem getting a GED. My Mother dropped out of school at the age of 17, and was past 45 when she got her GED so she could be a teacher's aid in the public schools.

If others are able to "learn" from what you "show and tell" them,....that is a God given talent. I'm sure God would expect you to use what he supplied. Good Luck!

Nice post Harv. Isn't it funny how people make an impact and you may not even see it until later on. I think it is good that you remembered a friend today.

I read something interesting in our paper today... an interview with a local business man that I know. He said something to the effect that we often spend significant time and money training workers to do tasks, but don't teach them to think. From your posts over the years I think you are very good at teaching people to think. You already are a fine teacher.

Theres no doubt about it you have the tools w/in to teach..read your posting thru the years.

HS diploma or not. I have learned much from you from your post and assisting with projects that were done during TX get togethers.
Sure wish I could attend your classes when they start.

You will do a great job. It is always nice to have those who believe in others. Mentors are very important in everyday life. I enjoy it when I am at work and I see a veteran officer take a rookie under his wing and act as his mentor. I just wish everyone would give it a try.

No worries over the h.s. diploma...some of the best wisdom I have obtained thru life came from folks w/ no high schooling or college degrees. I have always wanted to teach, but financially could not. Well, my wife and I are approaching a point in our lives where it won't be necessary for me to make the money I make now. Teaching, here I come... Good luck with your new adventure, you will do well.
