My original post, Let People Know Where You Are, was lost in the Great TBN & CBN Disk Crash Of 2003 so a summary is as follows...

This past Wednesday, my wife was exercising one of our horses (TB/QH mare), by herself, in our riding ring (about 100 yards from our house). She was thrown and suffered a mild concussion. We were not 100% sure what happened since she could not remember anything about the accident. She remembered trying to sit up in the ring and, due to soreness, not being able to. The next thing she remembered was sitting in the tack room. The horse's tack was removed and put away. She doesn't remember doing this.

We spent 3 hours in the local Urgent Care center getting 6 x-rays (which revealed an old chipped vertebrae) and a total body examination. Nothing unusual was found. The Dx was a mild concussion. Plenty of rest was the Rx.

My advice to my TBN friends...before you take off on a tractoring chore, make sure someone knows where you are going, what you will be doing and when to expect you back, even if it's only 100 yards away.

My wife is recovering nicely, although she's given the phrase 'sore all over' new meaning. She hobbled out to the barn yesterday and brought back her riding helmet. Which confirms what happened. As you can see from the photo, the outside, bottom of the back of the helmet was cracked about 1.5" (top picture). The inside of the helmet was cracked even worse, 2.5 inches (bottom picture). It's not just the plastic helmet shell that is cracked, the underlying styrofoam is also split.

I know there are a number of people on TBN, and CBN, who ride horses. If you don't already wear a helmet, please learn from this incident, OK? /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif If she hadn't been wearing a helmet, this would have been a 4th of July I would not have been able to forget. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Mike,

Glad your wife is OK.

Your helmet advice is great advice. One saved my head a couple years ago...similar design helmet I would guess, but a bicycle accident.

Take care...

Mike - Thanks for relating this - things like this go in our heads and may make a little warning go off in the future, and we may never really connect it to your experience, but you've most likely contributed to preventing another injury, or worse.

On the "where you are" theme, we've started using borrowed walkies when I am cutting in the woods - I run out of gas about hourly, and if more than that goes by without a call, my wife will come out and find me - we always go over where I will be, and I leave my pack, snowshoes, and tools out a little in plain sight. When I'm out of range, which we hope to remedy with better units soon, I always go home for lunch early, even if it's easier to stay in the woods.

Hope wifey feels better soon......don't need to tell you to pamper her for a while.

Glad your wife is ok! I've been examining options for a two way system for the tractor myself. Wife brought up the fact that when I'm out she can't communicate with me and wondered what would happen if I were to get hurt. So, we've been looking at walkie talkies to have on the tractor when I'm in the field. The "once and hour check in" is a great idea. I'd like to find a headset that could be used with a CB or other type device (be nice if it had an FM feature as well). I've seen a couple of post on noise suppression systems, anyone know if there is one with a two way option?

Looks like that's the ticket? Checked on the distributor list and there was a BUNCH of dealers! Anyone with an idea of who might be the least expensive?

I just started using the new Peltor Alert muff style headset. I haven't tried the AM reception but I can say the FM is crystal clear. I probably will be buying the patch cord that allows the use of a walkie talkie to keep in touch with the wife.

The Alerts are also the ANR noise reduction, that feature works fine, but on the tractor it is usually a solitary situation and I don't need to listen for a voice so I go with the FM only.

Proof positive that helmets save lives. Better buy her another.
