I haven't bought carpet in quite awhile and don't know the answer to your question, but I wanted to comment on the star rating of the different carpets. First, it's not a universal rating, so the lesser brands tend to over rate their carpets, while the bigger names like Shaw have a more universal rating system. The other thing that a friend who sells flooring told me is that a 3 star carpet is the exact same carpet as the 4 and 5 star carpet, they just extend the warrantee longer for each additional star rating for the additional cost of the carpet.

As a contractor, I remove carpet all the time. I have never found a floor under the carpet that was clean. In ever case, there is a layer of dust, sand and dirt under the carpet. It is impossible to vacuum up what gets down through the carpet, and even through the pad. And then there is what pets that pee in the house do to the pad of a carpet. Lets just say it's nasty, and impossible to clean up. Usually they keep going back to that same spot and it's a never ending battle to minimize how nasty it gets.

I like carpet in the bedroom. We have 4 Akita's in our house. All the carpet is being torn out and replaced with tile. Tile is cold, it's hard, and it's easy to clean. The cleaning part is our priority and we're learning to live with area rugs. We're even going to remove the floating engineered hardwood flooring and replace it with tile. Everything is going to be tile!!!
Good post eddie thanks, we looked at wood laminate but twice the price of carpet at our age went the carpet option. Our kitchen and mud room have laminate flooring.

Carpet... so many choices!

I can't rent a place without carpet in most of my areas... can't sell a house with carpet... go figure?

My grandmother installed wool carpet in 1960 in the living room... 60 years ago and it has been fantastic though expensive when new.

At the Hospital... I had glue down commercial nylon installed on concrete in 1995... amazing stuff... really.

One of the hospital Doctor tenants didn't like the color scheme and was allowed, over my objections to rip it out and given a 10k tenant credit at lease extension signing... the carpet is 2 years old and looks awful... talking about wear, seams, etc... and now the tenant is leaving end of this year... and we need to replace the carpet...

Floor Covering is often sold based on looks/fashion of the moment...

Hard to beat quality nylon for wear...

Amazes me that that awful laminate and wood flooring hasn't been offered in vehicles, yet. There used to be nice (unlike the horrible plastic doors today) carpet on vehicle doors and some guys still couldn't get enough and put (shag) carpet on the dash too! lol

Carpet has got to be the worst possible covering for a vehicle floor. Both of my trucks have a vinyl floor like they should. Most people pay money to put in carpet and then pay to have vinyl mats that don’t even fit right but back in.

Never thought of it that way. Maybe just have fond memories as a kid, rolling around in the nice stinky carpet of the family car.

I used to drive ex police cars and the vinyl covering doesn't exactly work either. The heavy fiber insulation underneith was ALWAYS totally soaked when I got the vehicles. Too many holes and perforations, like where the seats mount. Plus, it just wasn't really that durable. It cracked quite easily. I always put in carpet.

Yeah I agree... being in the trades & always having a multiple pet home I'm not a fan of carpet.... we use area rugs but they are easily moved for cleaning or for replacement... & I retrofitted the house with radiant floor heat so cold floors are not an issue... If I was to choose carpet I would probably go with nylon....

while I can't comment on which carpet would be best today, as I only have tile and hardwood.
I had carpet when I lived in town, and that carpet was of the type if you spilled something on it and couldn't get the stain out. You could actually clean it with bleach and it wouldn't bleach out the carpet color.
The people that sold it to me said the fibers in the carpet was the actual colors and not dyed. Therefore, the bleach would not damage the carpet.
If I were ever considering carpet again, I would go with this type

I'd really be interested in what the carpet fibers are. I'm not saying there isn't such a thing, but everything I've read indicates that even fibers that are colored all the way thru will be affected by bleach. The term "bleach" normally means a chlorine based product. There are "colorsafe bleach" that are based on hydrogen peroxide but do affect the chemical bonds of the colors but not in the same way so not sure about them. Bleach (and sunlight) break chemical bonds of the color molecules and affect the reflectivity of light which is the fading we see and if it goes far enough, it becomes white.

It was regular bleach like you buy at the grocery store. Nothing special. As far as the fibers in the carpet, I couldn't tell you.
Bought it from a carpet warehouse in Dalton GA
Later, I built a den down stairs. Talked to a carpet guy and told him I wanted the same type carpet there.
He said he had never heard of that but would talk to someone where he buys carpet.
He came back with samples I used bleach on the sample with no adverse affects, and that is what I used in the den.
