Affordable is relative. If you buy used, you need to come up with the full cash.
For instance I just bought a Kubota
B2710, 27 horsepower, year probably 2002 or 03, with 500 hours for $9500 and turned around and added $1000 for a dealer service and repair and $300 for new front tires. It's now in great shape, and I like it very much. Total price: $10,800, then add a bit to replace the torn up seat and two cracked hydrulic hoses. $11,000 out of pocket - no sales tax. I see the same advertised by a dealer for around $12,500 + tax. part of the issue is I had that cash.
Contrast that with my John Deere 3005, 27 horse power, which I bought new from a dealer in Dec. 2009 for around $18000 plus sales tax (8% in WA). It now has 200 hours. It is bright and shiney since it was never left out in the weather. I put down $1500 and am paying $250 per month for five years (0% interest), pretty affordable. Could have paid cash but there was no point since the dealer did not offer me a cash discount.
So the issue is:
which was more affordable in thiis day and age when loans aren't availble for a third party used sale, and when all the manufacturers are offering 0% financing? New may be the way to go if you have affordability problems. On the other hand if you have cash, used definitely saves you money. Go figure.
