How far are you willing to travel?

Affordable is relative. If you buy used, you need to come up with the full cash.

For instance I just bought a Kubota B2710, 27 horsepower, year probably 2002 or 03, with 500 hours for $9500 and turned around and added $1000 for a dealer service and repair and $300 for new front tires. It's now in great shape, and I like it very much. Total price: $10,800, then add a bit to replace the torn up seat and two cracked hydrulic hoses. $11,000 out of pocket - no sales tax. I see the same advertised by a dealer for around $12,500 + tax. part of the issue is I had that cash.

Contrast that with my John Deere 3005, 27 horse power, which I bought new from a dealer in Dec. 2009 for around $18000 plus sales tax (8% in WA). It now has 200 hours. It is bright and shiney since it was never left out in the weather. I put down $1500 and am paying $250 per month for five years (0% interest), pretty affordable. Could have paid cash but there was no point since the dealer did not offer me a cash discount.

So the issue is: which was more affordable in thiis day and age when loans aren't availble for a third party used sale, and when all the manufacturers are offering 0% financing? New may be the way to go if you have affordability problems. On the other hand if you have cash, used definitely saves you money. Go figure.

The OP only has 20,000(no mention of cash or finance), but needs at least a 60HP tractor with a loader and cab. I don't think new is in the equation.

Personally, I would nix the cab...........just buy a tractor and build my own cab if I needed it. 20,000 ain't much money when dealing with that kind of horsepower.

How were the 5600 series machines? I am really up in the air

Do you really need 60 to 80 hp for road maintenance, property management and light logging?

I bet you could do all that with 30-40 hp, maybe even less. In that range there are a lot of good $20k possibilities.

60-80 hp is the low end of the big agricultural tractors where plowing the earth, baling hay and other heavy duty jobs are done.

Is road maintenance plowing snow or freshening gravel roads? Is property management maintaining commercial properties or managing agricultural land? Is the logging for firewood or lumber?

That's a tough one. I was looking for something similar about a year ago, to do many of the same types of work. I looked used, but discovered that tractors in that size (and perhaps any size) if well kept, don't lose much value. Those that are lower in price are very old and in most cases need ongoing work. And I agree with a previous poster, your kind of in a funny hp range there where some of the machines are regular ag tractors, particularly close to 80 hp. Those can be some big machines.

So, I started looking new. I found that the John Deere 5075E (75hp) (they also make a 65, 55, and 45), and the Kubota M7040SUD can both be purchased new (4 wheel drive and FEL) for just under 30. That's brand new, with financing. I decided to go with the Kubota M7040SUD (68hp) because it offered more for the price, IMO. I got 0% financing for 7 years in the deal too. The under 30 number is the negotiated price. Sticker would be more.

The one thing you can't get with the machines I mentioned above is a cab. But, if you're looking to do some sort of logging work, a cab may not be desirable anyway. Once in the woods, branches and stuff can scratch up a cab and make it difficult to get into places where an open station tractor wouldn't have a problem.

One last thing, if the tractor is well taken care of, it should hold its value well. So, if you want to sell it at some point, you hopefully could recover most of what you spent.

Good luck with your search.

Road maintenance is plowing heavy snow, pushing banks back where you need a machine with as*. Some stump removal, tugging full length maple trees. I have considered smaller tractors and have used a JD 4600, I have abused it trying to accomplish tasks, thats why I think I need something larger.
