He was making a good point that even if you have a gun awareness is extremely important and shouldn't be overlooked. It is actually a very good point in a gun discussion!

Agree. It was an excellent reminder and fits in any discussion of guns.

It is because of an earlier discussion about guns I now always "look someone in the hands" before I "look them in the face". The point is well suited to this topic.

One two note some of the Hornady cartridges may have trimmed brass. I dont think the one mention, cause using XTP and not critical defense. But I think the plastic tip may cause them to be shortened on some.

Just as Hornady leverolution rounds cause brass to be trimmed.

Cool think about Hornady is I think they sell all there bullets. So you could buy one measure length and while not getting exact load, could load something similar to know it feeds and practice with it.

I finally settled on the Glock 33 in .357 Sig for my CCW. I like it because it has more muzzle energy than the .40 caliber (350 vs 375 ) which isn't a lot but it is a bit more than the 300 for the 9 mm. With a simple barrel change I can shoot .40 in my Glock 33 for practice which is a bit cheaper than .357 Sig or with barrel and mag change can shoot 9mm for practice.
When carrying, I like the small size, light weight and superior ballistics of this gun.

The only drawback is the cost to shoot .357 Sig which might be as high as $40 per box vs $10 and change for a 9mm, but for about $150 which includes a couple of mags one can convert it to 9mm or .40 (no mags necessary with .40) and basically have 2 guns to play with.

I am not sure you are finding $10 boxes of 9mm practice ammo. 9mm carry will be $20-$25.

So when looking at prices, you need to look at practice and carry ammos. Practice is typically 50, and sef defense 25 per box.

Some cheap, but Hornady $16.50 for 25. Not critical defense, but xtp is good bullet. I would have to look at speeds and such, to really decide.

I thought about the 357sig but after a bunch of reading and availability I decided on the 40 for carry, I have it in my SW99. My HK is VP9, I use that as a range gun but the 99 trigger and reset is second to none so I may buy another SW99 in 9mm or a Walther P99 (same gun) in 9mm.

I wonder if she will stick with it. I bought a few guns, until I was honest with myself, that I wanted it for carry and not shooting.

I used to carry small of back too, then read something about having it right on your spine, isn't the best idea. Maybe not a big deal for a girl if she lives a good life.

She has stuck with it for 6+ years, although when she got married, her husband had a bunch of Glocks. The .45 is still her favorite gun, but she is not licensed to carry everywhere so often has alternate items.

Getting a licesnse to carry it, is part of carrying it. Some people carry a gun most every days, like they keep home owners insurance on their house. I don't have one every waking moment like some, but I am using my permit pretty much every day I leave the house. Some times I do make the mistake of leaving it close by, and not always on my body.

I realize some states make it hard to carry. In that case you really are not carrying than.

Yeah, Illinois is really bad about that. The list of places we cannot carry is ridiculous. It really puts you in a tough position sometimes. Follow the law, and you potentially put yourself and your loved ones at risk, not to mention the potential for exposing the presence of an unattended firearm if you have to turn around at a door and take it back to your car. Or, risk running afoul of the law by ignoring it (concealed is concealed, right?) and hoping you don't get caught ... which carries a very stiff penalty here.

I bought 10 boxes (no limit) of 9mm American Eagle ammo at Atwoods Farm and Ranch just last week for $9.99 per box(not including sales tax). This ammo is very good practice ammo. I also found Perfecta at Walmart for less than $9 per box of 50 and Geco for about the same thing. Academy Sports usually has good pricing also. All are brass cases good for reloading so I save my brass, but as long as I can get them for around $10 for 50, I wont attempt reloading at this time. Many times I find aluminum case ammo for around $8.50 for 50 round boxes

As for carry ammo, one can spend as much as his budget allows mostly around $1 per round for some of them which is really ridiculous pricing for just changing the bullet in the shell. I too am guilty of paying exorbitant pricing for personal defense rounds when I suspect that even a FMJ round will incapacitate any perp with one shot and certainly before my 10-17 round mags are empty.

My post about $40 per box for 357 Sig is for target rounds with sometimes hollow point available for the same price but not the fancy personal defense loads.
