I agree with Jerry. Use the disc to cut it and the drag to smooth it then maybe the fence for final finish.

There were about 30 large trees, with trunks 12"-18" at the base.

I hate wasting stuff, but these are piled high and salvaging the wood would be a lot of work.

I'll probably burn these piles and man they will each make one heckuva bonfire /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Ya. I hate to waste stuff too, but you are right. It would be a LOT of work to pull them all out of the pile and limb them.

I did a bunch of cedar clearing this summer.

This (Thanksgiving) weekend I cut down about 150 small cedars, most (1"-2" trunk) I could just lop and the bigger ones I hadda saw.

Cutting them down is part of the "wildlife habitat plan" I have filed with the county to get my habitat (tax, basically the same as ag) exemption. But I would have done it anyway, I want to encourage the hardwoods and minimize the cedars, and getting them while they are small seems like the best strategy.

It is a pain getting them to a burn pile tho' /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I am in the same predicament of sorts. The house I built was an old farm lot with lots of furroughs in it. The farmer down the road with the right equipment is going to level mine in the spring at a cost I feel is better used paying him instead of me trying to be a hero. As you mentined it took just a few minutes to realize this job is bigger than it looks

Sendero,

Not to hijack the thread too much but did you have to have an ag exemption in place to get the habitat exemption? I'd love to get one on my place but have been told I have to have an ag exemption first. This makes little sense to me as I want to maintain the habitat I have, not destroy it then rebuild it. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I agree with your sentiment but unfortunately you got good info. Only land with the ag exemption in place is eligible for conversion to habitat exemption.

I got lucky in that the land I bought did have ag exemption.

The program is a great deal for me, as we bought the land to use as a 40 acre wildlife habitat with a couple acres for a house and gardening anyway. But it does require that you make improvements every year, and file a plan for said improvements to the county. But all in all, a great plan.

I suspect the reason for the ag exemption prerequisite is pretty simple - counties would lose a boatload of tax revenue if everyone who could legitimately claim this exemption were allowed to /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

on edit: If your property is fenced, maybe you could find a way to get a legit ag exemption for a time, then convert...

Billy,
depending on your soil conditions you might get by with taking an old heavy stock gate and dragging that. If you want to increase its ability to smooth things out then you can run some chain link fencing underneath it.

Something to think about.

Not only that, it's a pain trying to light the burn pile. Last Friday, I took advantage of a few days break in the rain to burn my pile. 2-1/2 gallons of diesel later, it still wouldn't stay lit on its own. I'm ready for a few weeks at least of drier weather, but don't know when we'll actually get it.

Yes, I was afraid of that. Many folks around me with 5-20 acre parcels are fencing and putting in goats since our land appraisals went sky-high a couple of years ago. I just can't bear to do it because much of my land has NEVER (to my knowledge) been cleared because it is so marginal for any use. I've got scrubby little trees that are 50-60 years old. I mean, I know it's only 10 acres but hey, there's some really neat stuff on it.

Back on topic. I know you don't want to buy another implement, but that task sure sounds like a job for a disc.
