( I have never seen law enforcement show the slightest interest in any tractor on the road )

Ditto , here in florida. I drive a couple miles to mow my pasture, and pretty much every time I see at least one LEO.. city/county/state... When they go by or pass.. they are not even looking my direction.. they are looking at the 'auto' traffic... Course.. tractors on the road here are very common.. especially the big ones that do the contract mowing for the city/county.. etc.

Not uncommon to see a tractor parked at a jiffy store, even in the city. Also not uncommon to see them at the feed store. A while back i say a guy on an old farmall with 5' drag mower at the feed store. he was stacking bags of feed ont he mower....

Does anyone happen to know what California rules are?

I can tell you what I was told they were -- circa 1960. I had a summer job working on an apricot farm. According to the owner, we could cross a public road with equipment, but not drive down it, and that's all we did.

You might want to check with a more current source, though. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I'm in Central NY and have driven mine a few miles down the road for snow plowing and various yard work. If I'm going more than a that few miles I'd trailer it anyway. I have a State trooper and a Sheriff living close by and drive by their homes. They wave as I drive by if they are outside. They've called me over as I was going by to do some work for them too so I asked them about it. Both told me the laws are gray in this area but as long as the tractor meets the states lighting requirements, headlights, a tail light, turn signals, 4 ways going, a SMV triangle they wouldn't stop me. I even added a yellow revolving light on top for added visibility. I do live in a rural area and wouldn't drive it through downtown Syracuse but thats 20 miles from me anyway.

we also run into this problem with gators and rangers and such. it seems anything over 1000lbs?? in NY can't be registered unless it's a motor vehicle not an atv or tractor. seems odd that when you try to obey the law you get effed and if you don't obey the law you're definitely effed. sorry about the language but thats about how it works here

Don't worry, As soon as NY DMV figures out they can make money on registration fees for Gators & Rangers they will charge their fees. Next thing you know golf carts will need to be registered. I remember when you didn't need registration or plates for 4 wheelers, snowmobiles, dirt bikes etc. Now, If you go off your own property with them they need to be registered, have plates and insurance. Now look at the fees and they jacked up the title fees from $10 to $50 just to transfer a title back in Dec. 05. The thing that has always bugged me is that they charge sales tax everytime a vehicle is sold and someone else titles and registers it.

I'm also in Mass.
I think I'd work on the problematic neighbor first, not the legality entanglements of things like farm plates.
I'd figure out when they get their driveway plowed and the next time there's a storm I'd get my tractor down there and clear it out 1/2 hour before their plow guy arrives.
This could be on the way to uncle's place, it seems you'll be passing there anyway.
Maybe I'd INVITE them to the parties, even if they're old f*rts they might still appreciate the invitation.

Just a coupla thoughts, it could be a lot quicker, cheaper, easier than fighting them for the next n years (-:

Just as Soundguy and others from Florida have said, no more than an SMV sign is required. Flashers are optional, not addressed, but I use mine to make sure I am seen.

There is no type of registration in Florida for these tractors either.
