I have a bx1500 and hhave done the same thing. I spread about 45 tons of dirt the other weekend. Drive into the pile for a heaping bucket, pull the stick back and...nothing. Back up slightly and it lifts the whole load. I quickly learned to scoop more from the top.
However, later that day, I filled the bucket with larg rocks (iron stone is heavy). The FEL had no problems lifting with a full bucket. I guess the top of the dirt pile was too heavy to scoop through.
Love those little machines though.
