I have a couple of attachments that I need to buy for my tractor, but I am unsure of the configurations I need to get. I have two requirements to meet, moving stacks of square bales on skids and moving round bales of hay. I am leaning towards getting a spear and forks that attach to the FEL instead of the 3PH. I am concerned with the weight though. The round bales are ~1200 lbs, and the pallets ~1000lbs. I want the reach of the FEL implements due to I will probably need to unload from a flatbed semi.

If you are talking about doing that with your JD 855, I have serious doubts that it is anywhere near enough tractor to lift that much weight, especially extended off the FEL.

Don't think the 855 is going to do it. I have a JD790 with a 70 loader, lift capacity of about 700 pounds. I have a set of forks and tried to lift a round bail weighing about 1000 pounds, wouldn't do it. I know that with my box blade as ballast and with loaded tires, a full bucket (54") of wet mud will have the real floating.

I think you need a bigger tractor to do it safely.

That is exactly my concern. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Yeah.....I'll submit that purchase order to the CFO /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I think I will have to just get a 3PH pallet mover, and stick with shoving the round bales around with the FEL. Luckily, they are on a cement pad, and move fairly easily.

The 855 specs. say 1005 lbs lift at 2 feet behind the 3ph links. Not much leeway. Time to shop for a 5 pound set of forks. It may take some creative techniques to move your hay. Good luck!...A larger tractor probably counts as a creative technique. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

My 1987 vintage catalog and manual lists 841 lbs 2 feet back from the links for the 3PH lift capacity. There may have been differences across model years.

The 1998 adds say 1,005 lbs for the 855, so there must have been an upgrade. The 955 was rated at 1,175 lbs, the 870 at 1,880 lbs, and the 970 at 2,020, all at 24 inches.

Joe1,

That's what I was thinking. I think JD switched from the 52 Loader to the 70 (?) loader in 1988. I bought my JD 755 new in April 1988 as a left over 1987 model. It had the 52 loader on it but the 1988 units on the lot had a different loader. Since the 855 in question has a 52 loader, it maybe pre-1988.

I am actually unsure of the year of my tractor, it is something I have been too busy working to track down /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

According to the manuals that the dealer gave me, my 52 FEL is rated at 700lbs, 1300 lbs breakout. The 3PH is rated at only 785lbs @ 24" behind the link ends, 1686lbs at link ends.

The loader manual is #OM-TY20793 Issue C6, Copyright 1986.
The tractor manual is #OMM70367 A7, Copyright not listed.

Been several years since I screwed around with bales, round or square, but a #1200 pounder on a 755 tractor, no matter what loader, just sounds too heavy for the tractor. The Capital Press, out of Salem, Oregon advertises a unit called a " Hay Buddy" squeeze type setup. Best bet on that type unit is you only grab what the tractor will handle. If you get tippy, put the load back, and grab a smaller load, right from the truck. Setbacks, I don't think a 755 will reach high enough to unload at 12' from a semi trailer without ramping from the side, and no round bale handling(as far as I know, maybe a sqeeze works just as well on a round bale as a square). I've got considerable hours working from the seat of a 755, great little tractor with a hydro setup, but am running JD Powerreverser 4600 for my business, and am so happy with it I could just{space for rent}. If this is a horse hobby farm farm setup I guess you'll just have to tell the wife when the truck comes loaded with hay" C'mon dear, truck's here, remember we have to feed the driver if it takes more than 3 hours to unload. OR you can say" WOW, remember how long it used to take to unload before we got the new tractor and hay squeeze /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Dave,

The dealer should be able to tell you the year very easily based on the tractor serial number. There are probably guys here on TBN that could tell you as well if you posted your serial number.
