Light show extrordinaire

WOW! That seems kind of cliche', but.....WOW! We just had a band of very strong storms blow through (literally). 70 MPH wind gust's accompanied by pounding rain and very intense lightening and thunder. I've always been mezmorized by lightening. When it started, I went out on the covered porch on the front of our house to watch. Just about the time I got situated to watch, lightening struck the electric service on the house across the road from us. First reaction is to cover up. (like that's going to save me.) By the time I focused again, there were sparks raining down all over the roof of the house. There seems to be no fire, but the fire dept. is there checking things out now. That's the closest I've ever been to a lightening strike. (Seen several from a great distance) What an amazing display of natures power.

Our lights went out for a few seconds, but came right back up.

I'm jazzed after that show! Once again, WOW!

Have you ever seen a strike close up?

Yes, once, I was driving pretty slowly, in the rain, on a two lane asphalt road when lightning struck a transformer on a power pole just as I passed it and, in addition to the loud noise, a huge shower of sparks came down on and around my pickup; gave me quite a scare.

About 17 years ago I was working at a small service station, when a typical summer storm came through. My co-worker and I took a little break, and were standing in the bay door watching the storm. A bolt of lightening struck the transformer on the telephone pole about 40 feet in front of us. It exploded into a bunch of flying shrapnel (which we didn't stick around to watch). About 40 minutes later there was a fist sized piece of metal laying on the ground that was dry (about 20 feet away from where we were standing). We kicked it into a puddle on the ground, and it steamed for about 3 minutes. Glad I didn't try to pick it up That's about as close as I want to come to lightening!

Be very careful watching a storm if you are out in the open.

My daughter worked part time caring for a quadraplegic man. After graduating college, he and some buddies were out golfing and a bolt hit him.

He'll never be the same and requires care 24/7. It's sad; I don't think he knows anything now, and can't speak. His eyes follow you crossing the room, but that's about it.

Years ago when I was a kid living in Stow, Ohio lightening hit a large tree in the next door neighbors back yard. The tree literally exploded throwing large pieces of wood shrapnel everywhere. That tree was DOA on the scene.
